MILTON - The Monroe wrestling team battled in every match but lost a dual meet to Milton 41-17 Friday night.
Monroe won four matches and the Red Hawks, which are second place in the Badger South Conference, won 10 matches, but only could rack up 41 points.
"The score didn't reflect how hard they wrestled," Monroe coach Jeraimy Jackson said. "They all wrestled with a lot of heart."
Monroe senior Kevin Klopfenstein, ranked fourth in Division 2 at 138 pounds, edged Milton's Kyle Hinners 3-2. Hinners is ranked third in Division 1. Senior Trevor Gorr (220), ranked fourth, defeated Artan Rushiti 8-0. At heavyweight, Monroe junior Brett Zimmerman, ranked eighth, pinned Hunter Nelson in 1 minute, 14 seconds and senior Aaron Hesgard (132) defeated Sean Gohlke 11-2.
The Cheesemakers lost several close matches. Freshman Traiten Gorr (170) lost to Randy Lipke 4-3, sophomore Cody Wolf (152) lost 5-0 to Evan Whitehead, and Ryan Hughes (160) lost to John McCarthy 6-2. At 195, Monroe junior Troy Gorr lost to Zach Areneson 4-0 and Jesse Keizer (126) lost to Alex Chesmore 12-7.
"All of our guys battled and competed," Jackson said. "No one gave up. They grinded it out for six minutes. They were not going to let us pin them."
Monroe hosts Edgerton in a non-conference dual meet on Monday.
Riverdale 45, Darlington 24
DARLINGTON - The Redbirds won two of the seven matches wrestled in a dual meet loss to Riverdale on Friday.
Darlington's Brandon Aardahl (120) defeated Riverdale's Isiah Snyder 8-3, and Alex Schulte (170) edged Trevor Troxel 3-0. Darlington's Zach Wolf (220), Cruz Bahena (heavyweight) and Jeremy Wick (132) all won by forfeit. The Redbirds forfeited five weight classes.
