MONROE - It took two Cheesmaker goals to provide the smelling salt, but Monday night's non-conference game with Evansville finally reached its anticipated playoff atmosphere.
Monroe scored the first three goals and secured a 3-1 victory over the Blue Devils to wrap up the regular season. Thursday, the teams will square off again in the first round of WIAA Division 2 regionals in Evansville at 6:30 p.m.
"One the second goal went in, play got much more physical," Monroe coach Miriam O'Neill said.
The first was put home by junior Pam Lehman before Kylee Ritschard put her head and some pre-game advice to use.
After O'Neill insisted that Ritschard drill her headers before the game, the practice made perfect as she scored the second goal on a helper by Chrissy Marti.
Kayln Kundert added the second-half goal and Niamh O'Neill-Culhane stopped seven of the eight shots she faced in the net.
