MADISON - The Monroe tennis team qualified three singles players and two doubles teams for the WIAA Division 2 Whitewater Sectional.

Monroe junior Carson Root at No. 1 singles defeated Edgerton's Andy Miller 6-0, 6-1 Monday at the subsectional at University of Wisconsin's Nielsen Tennis Stadium to qualify for the sectional.

Freshman Taylor Soddy at No. 2 singles beat Big Foot-Williams Bay's Gerald Leslie 6-0, 6-0. Soddy, who was a No. 2 seed, was tied with McFarland's Alex McLimans 4-6, 6-2 when McLimans had to default due to heat exhaustion.

Senior Eric Knudtson defeated Josh Peterson 6-0, 6-0. He then defeated No. 2 seed Michael Gray of McFarland in three sets 2-6, 6-2, 6-4.

The Cheesemakers' No. 1 doubles team of senior Patrick Gellings and Garrett Tschanz qualified for the sectional after beating Jefferson's Alex Eiler and Jesse Seeber 6-0, 6-0.

Baertschi and Noriega qualified at No. 2 doubles. The two defeated Whitewater's Ben Hanson and Cody Alexander 6-3, 6-0 and then knocked off McFarland's Matt Herold and Patrick Vallon 6-1, 6-2.
