WISCONSIN DELLS - Monroe wrestling coach Jeriamy Jackson has thrown down the gauntlet to his young Cheesemakers roster.
"When we are losing, we are making some very 'rookie' mistakes that we simply can't have anymore," Jackson said.
The Cheesemakers responded by going 3-2 as a team at the Wisconsin Dells Invitational Saturday and got strong performances from a variety of grapplers. Gavin Wels went a perfect 5-0 on the day at 103 pounds as did senior Kyle Klopfenstein at 140. Mason Goff "looked much better" at 135 pounds with a 4-1 record at the invitational.
"We wrestled much better than we have previously," Jackson said. "We've definitely made some positive progress since the beginning over the year."
Dylan Schwitz (119), Tyler Rupnow (125), Michael Leu (160), Dillon Weckerley (171), Cory Kundert (189) and Lucas Leu (285) all went 3-2 overall for the day.
Monroe defeated the host Chiefs (55-16), Edgerton (54-25) and Brookfield Central (39-22) at the invitational. The Cheesemakers lost to Wilmot (49-27) and Badger rival Reedsburg (52-22).
"We kept things simple, didn't make mistakes, wore down and controlled our opponents," Jackson said.
"As a coaching staff we have been challenging the guys to go the extra mile and put in the work and time needed to get better. I don't think anyone likes to lose. I am looking for the guys to step it up to the next level."
The Cheesemakers get back to work Friday night with a dual meet tilt with Mount Horeb at home.
