MADISON — Monroe’s No. 1 doubles team of Wes Saunders and Ryan Mathiason were knocked out of the WIAA Division 1 individual tennis tournament in the first round, suffering a 6-1 6-1 loss to 10-seed Al Vizgaitis and Jack Schultz of Nicolet. That team advanced to the third round before losing to the 7-seed from Arrowhead.

It was Mathiason’s end straight trip to the state tournament, qualifying with doubles partner Max Petitjean in 2023. Saunders, who’s special request to the 2023 tournament was denied, will continue his tennis career at Hamline University in the fall.
