ARGYLE — The third-ranked Vikings kept their winning streak alive after a 6-2 win at Argyle April 23.
Senior ace Carter Ruegsegger struck out 12 batters without a walk and allowed just three hits in six innings to get the win. Lane Busser pitched the seventh for Pecatonica.
The rivalry game was a pitcher’s duel until the fifth inning, when the Vikings (9-1) finally got to Orioles starter Miken Godfrey.
With one out and two on, Colton Schraepfer hit an RBI single right to plate the game’s first run. Busser, the very next batter, roped a double down the right field line to score Griffin Gordon and Schraepfer.
Gavin Johnson then came on in relief for Argyle and struck out Everett Johnson for the second out. The next three batters all reached, two of which on RBI singles to make it 5-0.
The Orioles scored an unearned run on Ruegsegger in the bottom of the inning. Clay Ritschard broke up Ruegsegger’s no-hit bid with a two-out double to right. A batter later, a dropped third strike passed ball allowing Travis Dammen to reach first base and Ritschard to score from third. Both teams added a run in the seventh.
Bo Hendrickson was 3 for 4 at the dish for Pecatonica, while Schraepfer was 2 for 4 and Busser 1 for 3 with a walk, two steals and two RBIs. Ritschard was 2 for 3 for Argyle.
Pecatonica 9, Belleville 5
BELLEVILLE — The Vikings led 7-0 going into the third inning and never looked back against the Wildcats in a nonconference game April 22.
Hendrickson pitched three innings, allowing five runs on seven hits and three walks. Everett Johnson got the save, tossing the final two innings of scoreless relief before inclement weather ended the game early. Jaydon Winkers and Austin Fahey pitched for Belleville.
At the plate, Zander Brunker was 2 for 3 with a home run, a double and three RBIs. Johnson also had a double and three RBIs, Schraepfer was 2 for 3 with three runs, and Dakota Doescher had a pair of hits and an RBI.
Winkers was 3 for 3 for Belleville, while Carson Syse, Matthew Hackman and Dylan Gratz each had a pair of hits.
Argyle 11, Orangeville 9
ORANGEVILLE — The Orioles defeated the Broncos in a nonconference border battle April 22.
Mitchell Flannery got the win on the mound in relief, tossing a shutout sixth inning while striking out the side. Gavin Johnson got the save with a scoreless seventh. Jake Ploessl started on the hill for the Orioles and allowed five hits and three walks in 3.2 innings. All five runs against Ploessl were unearned. Dammen pitched 1.1 innings in relief and gave up four runs on six hits while striking out two.
Argyle took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first, but Orangeville scored four unearned runs in the second to make it 4-2. Both teams traded runs in the third and the Broncos were up 9-5 after the fifth inning. The Orioles then rallied for six runs in the top of the seventh to escape with the win.
Ploessl had a double and three RBIs for Argyle, while Johnson was 3 for 4 with two steals and Godfrey 2 for 4 with four RBIs. Flannery drew four walks, swiped three bags and scored three runs.
Marshall 5, New Glarus 2
NEW GLARUS — Darris Schuett had two hits but a late Knights rally came up short in their Capitol South Conference loss April 22.
Marshall scored two runs in the third and went up 4-0 in the fourth. New Glarus would plate both of its runs in the bottom of the sixth but came up empty in the seventh.
Peyton Mendleski took the look on the hill, tossing 3.2 innings and allowing four runs on three hits and five strikeouts. Carter Siegenthaler allowed one run in 3.1 innings of relief on three hits, a walk and three strikeouts.
Schuett and Connor Siegenthaler each had doubles for New Glarus.
Barneveld 10, Black Hawk 0
SOUTH WAYNE — The Warriors were held to just two hits in a Six Rivers East loss to the Eagles April 23.
Rece Shelton and Jayden Stietz were the only Black Hawk players to reach safely on batted balls. Stietz took the loss on the hill, allowing nine runs on nine hits and three walks in 3.1 innings. Shelton came on in relief, allowing a run on three hits and a walk in 1.2 innings of work.
Barneveld scored three runs in the first, two in the second, five in the fourth and another run in the fifth.
Belleville 8, Monticello-Albany 4
MONTICELLO — The Ponies committed five errors in the nonconference loss April 23.
Monticello-Albany took a brief 1-0 lead in the first inning and tied it at 2 in the bottom of the second. But Belleville plated four runs in the third and a run in each of the fourth and sixth innings. The Ponies could only muster two more runs in the bottom of the third.
Corbin Kelley took the loss on the hill, allowing 11 hits and a walk in five innings of work. Just four of the seven runs allowed were earned. Josh Dahl came on in relief and allowed an unearned run with three strikeouts and three walks in two innings.
Kollin Klitzke had two hits for the Ponies. Luke Kelly, Trevor Syse and Winkers each had two hits for Belleville.
Belmont 14, Monticello-Albany 2
MONTICELLO — In a nonconference game April 22, the Braves smothered the Ponies and took advantage of five fielding errors.
Belmont led 8-0 by the time Monticello-Albany would plate its two runs in the bottom of the fifth.
Trayden Foster took the loss on the hill, tossing 2.1 innings with six runs (four earned) on four hits and four walks. Klitzke tossed 1.2 innings of relief, allowing two runs, and Andy Gertsch allowed six runs in 3.0 innings on the mound.
Darlington 14, Iowa-Grant 6
LIVINGSTON — Braden Davis was 3 for 5 with two runs and four RBIs in the leadoff spot for the Redbirds, which picked up a SWAL win April 23.
Preston Banfield was 3 for 4 with three RBIs, Carter Lancaster was 2 for 4 with four runs and Barry Schliem, Nick Andrae, Lancaster and Davis all collected doubles for the Redbirds.
Banfield got the win on the mound, tossing four innings and allowing just one run to score on three hits and three walks with four strikeouts. Schliem allowed three unearned runs to score in three innings of work.
Darlington scored five runs in the second inning and made it 7-1 in the fourth. A six-run sixth by the Redbirds put the game all but out of reach.
