EVANSVILLE — Brodhead-Juda knocked off former conference rival Evansville 41-6 on Aug. 26 in Week 3.
Evansville’s Bennett Keller tossed a 33-yard TD pass to Wyatt Nelson early in the game. Brodhead answered with a scoring drive of their own, as Marcus McIntyre played pitch and catch with Leon Saunders for a 15-yard score. In the second quarter, Joe Lohmar recovered a fumble and took it 33 yards for a touchdown. Not long later, Gabe Bockhop hit Gage Boegli for a 24-yard scored, pushing it to 20-6 at halftime.
In the third quarter, McIntyre scored on a 16-yard run. Evansville appeared poised to score again in the fourth quarter, reaching the Cardinals’ 4-yard-line. However, linebacker Blake Matthys picked off a pass and took it back 96 yards for a touchdown. Matthys scored once more later in the frame on an 18-yard rush.
The Cardinals had 156 rushing yards as a team, and added another 108 yards through the air. The Blue Devils had 102 yards passing and 176 on the ground. However, three interceptions and the lost fumble kept the scoring opportunities at bay. Matthys finished the game with 71 rushing yards to lead all ball-carriers.
Brodhead-Juda (2-0) was ranked third in Division 5 in the first WisSports.net Coaches Poll after Week 1. The Cardinals will travel to Richland Center (1-1) to open the Southwestern Wisconsin Conference slate in Week 3.
Black Hawk-Warren 32, Marshall 0
MARSHALL — The Warriors went into enemy territory for a big nonconference game in Week 2, and walked away conquerors. Black Hawk Warren (2-0, ranked 3rd in Division 7) beat Marshall (7th in D5) handily. The Cardinals now 1-1 in 2022, went 11-1 in 2021.
“It was a huge win for us, especially going up there and getting the win. I was happy overall with our performance, but told the boys that there is still a lot that we need to work on. We aren’t even close to where we want to be,” said Desie Breadon, Warriors coach.
Black Hawk-Warren tallied 325 yards on the ground, with Landen Mahoney (110) and Lucas Milz (102) each topping the century mark. Reed McNutt had four carries for 88 yards himself. All three had a touchdown, with Mahoney scoring twice.
Milz opened the scoring with a 52-yard rushing score with 3:05 left in the first half. McNutt made it a two-score game with a 79-yard run of his own with just 2:08 left in the first half. In the second half, Mahoney scored twice — once from 15 yards out in the third quarter, and then from 28-yards away in the fourth. The Warriors went for 2-points after all four touchdowns, and converted them all.
Defensively, the Warriors held the Cardinals to under 150 total yards, including just 8-for-22 passing for 96 yards. McNutt had an interception, and Brady Stietz recovered a fumble.
Up next for the Warriors will be a battle against the other Lafayette County powerhouse: Darlington. The Redbirds (1-1). The game is set for 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 2 in South Wayne.
St. Mary’s Springs 20, Darlington 18
FOND DU LAC — The Redbirds had the state’s top-ranked team on the ropes in Week 2. Darlington led the 2021 WIAA Division 6 runners-up 18-14 in the fourth quarter, but the Ledgers dug down deep and prevailed thanks to last-minute heroics.
With 52 seconds left in regulation, Springs running back Levi Huempfner found the goal line on an 8-yard carry to put his team ahead.
The Redbirds did a great job of bottling up the bulky senior. Huempfner had 1,200 rushing yards a season ago, averaging 7.3 yards per carry and scoring 17 times in 14 games. Against Darlington, Huempfner carried the ball 12 times for just 58 yards (4.8 ypc). The Ledgers got the bulk of their running yards from JT Koenigs, who touched the ball six times for 82 yards and two scores.
Darlington received 93 rushing yards from Maddox Goebel, and 125 combined passing yards from Cadyn Burbach and Breylin Goebel. The pair also threw three interceptions. Burbach and Breylin connected on a 79-yard TD pass in the second quarter, then Breylin scored from 9-yards out late in the second quarter to put the Redbirds ahead 12-7 at the break. Koenigs scored on a 65-yard run with 2:50 left in the third, but Breylin Goebel turned heads with a 20-yard pick-6 with 7:58 to play, putting his team ahead for the next seven minutes.
Highland 53, Parkview-Albany 14
ORFORDVILLE — The Vikings struggled in Week 2 against the Cardinals, which gained 588 yards of offense and averaging 9.8 yards per play.
Highland’s Cohen Healy had a day to remember, completing 11 of 21 passes for 196 yards and four TDs, and then picking up 160 rushing yards and another score. His lone blemish was an interception.
Karson Redman had 105 rushing yards on 17 carries for Parkview-Albany. QB Mathias Treinen was rushed by the quick Cardinals defense and completed just 3 of 14 passes for 19 yards.
Highland struck first early in the first quarter, but Redman answered with an 80-yard TD score on the next drive. Gage Pomplun then took a pick-6 42 yards to put the Vikings up 14-6. That momentum quickly faded, as Darren Laufenberg scored from 19 yards out to bring the Cardinals to within two points at 14-12 headed into the second quarter. Healy and Laufenberg then connected on a 7-yard TD in the second, and Dax Smelzer made it 25-14 Highland with a 1-yard plunge of his own before halftime set in. The Cardinals then scored four touchdowns in the second half to run away with the game.
The Vikings (0-2) will travel to River Ridge (2-0) in Week 3.
Elsewhere in Week 2, Dodgeville beat Pecatonica-Argyle 45-14.
