MONTICELLO — The Ponies finished last season 9-13 overall and 3-9 in the Six Rivers East, but lost just one player to graduation — sharp shooter Miah Brokopp, who was honorable-mention all-conference.
Leading the way on the court this year will be senior forward Mackie Errthum, who was also honorable mention all-conference last year after averaging 11 points and 8 rebounds per game.
Seniors Harley Disch (10 ppg) and Alexa Siegenthaler (5 ppg) are back, as is sophomore Ellie Gustafson (4 ppg, 4 rpg).
Newcomers include senior post McKenna Pfeuti, junior guard Katelyn Eyler, and freshman Jaden Zuber.
Third-year coach Mark Gustafson said goals for his team this season are simple. “Beat COVID,” he said, adding that he wants his team to compete deep into games.
In most seasons, a team faces several bouts of adversity throughout the season from injuries, conditioning, scouting or breakdowns on the court during crucial sequences. This year, Gustafson said additional challenges for the Ponies will include ball handling, depth, shooting and defense, and wearing masks while playing.
Gustafson said the fight for conference supremacy will come down to three teams — defending champion and heavy favorite Black Hawk, plus talented and experienced squads in Albany and Argyle.
