Oregon overwhelms Monroe

OREGON — The Cheesemakers were dealt a blow even before their 6-1 loss to Oregon May 18.

During warmups, Monroe’s No. 1 singles player, Chris Andraski, went down with a lower leg injury that could keep him out of action for a week or two. That meant head coach Matt Bordner had to quickly determine how to move forward, and he opted to mix up the lineups a bit to see how players would respond.

“We’re trying out a few different combinations and will have to get creative until we get Chris back,” Bordner said.

Freshman Wes Saunders moved up from the JV squad to play No. 1 singles and lost to Brandon Thorne 6-0, 6-0. Fellow freshman Ryan Mathiason stayed at No. 2 singles and was also blanked. Ethan Towne slid into the No. 3 singles roll after spending time in doubles to start the season. Towne lost 6-1, 6-0 to Kyle Barnish. At No. 4 singles, Miguel Aragon lost 6-2, 6-1.

Mitch Ferguson and Gavin Eckerman played at No. 2 doubles and lost 6-1, 6-3. Chris Giasson and James Seagreaves paired up at No. 3 doubles and lost 6-0, 6-1.

Monroe’s lone win in the dual came in the top doubles flight, as Aaron Roidt and Charlie Frehner defeated Aiden Scott and Ethan Ulhmann 6-3, 6-1.

“Our No. 1 doubles team picked up their first win together and played really well,” Bordner said. “They had some incredibly tough matchups to start the season and so I think this match was a nice confidence booster for them and I look forward to them building on their success from here.”
