Nine is fine: Sugar River wins ninth regional title

BELLEVILLE — With 11 points from Bella and Anya Brenkman, 3-seed Sugar River defeated 6-seed Lake Mills 5-1 in a WIAA Division 3 regional championship game June 1. The title is the Raiders’ ninth straight and 16th overall. 

Anya and Bella Brenkman assisted each other for goals in the first half, taking a 2-0 lead into the break. The two combined with Jenna Gentilli for a third goal three minutes into the fresh frame. The sisters then scored six minutes apart, capping the offense.

Addison Lutz and Eve Maclean split time in net, combining for five saves.

Anya Brenkman currently ranks third in the state for goals scored with 49. Ava Rizzitano of Kenosha St. Joseph leads the state with 59, and Cora Erickson of Cedar-Grove Belgium is second with 53.


SUGAR RIVER 8, EAST TROY 0

BELLEVILLE — Ten different players made the scoresheet in Sugar River’s opening playoff win against 14-seed East Troy May 30.

Audry Brueggemann put the Raiders on the board five minutes in with an unassisted goal. Lily Maynard assisted Anya Brenkman in the 22nd minute, giving Sugar River a 2-0 lead.

In the second half, Hannah Boldebuck and Brooke Warrell gave the Trojans a one-two punch with goals three minutes apart. Kennedi Esser notched her third goal of the season, followed by three goals in a span of four minutes to enforce the 8-0 mercy rule.

Addison Lutz and Alice Neton split time in net, combining for seven saves.
