NEW GLARUS — The Glarner Knights picked up a pair of girls basketball wins last weekend, defeating Wisconsin Heights 61-25 on Feb. 5, then rallying in the second half to topple rival Belleville the next day, 51-49.

In the thumping of the Vanguards (2-9, 2-6 Capitol South), New Glarus (18-4, 8-2) leapt out to a 27-8 lead after nine minutes of action, and went into the break ahead 40-15. Senior Jaylynn Benson added to her all-time program record in points by dropping 22 in the game, including hitting two 3-pointers and snagging 5 steals. Freshman Lindsey Schadewalt hit three 3s and finished with 11 points for the Knights. Ten different Knights scored in the contest.

In the win over Belleville (4-13, 2-6), New Glarus got off to a slow start, still dragging from the night before. The Knights trailed 29-22 at halftime.

“Belleville came to play,” New Glarus coach Kevin Parman said. “We found ourselves down 17 at one point. We didn’t have the energy Belleville had.”

The Knights then outscored the Wildcats 29-20 in the second half to snag the victory.

Benson finished with 14 points to lead the Knights. Shealyn Klosterman-Havens and Emma Marty each had 9 for New Glarus, while Schadewalt finished with 7. Ava Foley led Belleville with 19 points, and Callie Smith finished with 15 points and 15 rebounds.

“I’m proud of the way my team dug deep in the tank and found a way to win. We learned a lot from this game and now we have to fix what we need to and get ready for the tournament,” Parman said.
