WISCONSIN DELLS — On Jan. 31, the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association announced its 2022 Hall of Fame induction class. One of the 30 to be honored is Monroe High School graduate Tom Mitchell.
The induction is scheduled for Sept. 24 at Glacier Canyon Lodge of the Wilderness Resort in Wisconsin Dells. Information on purchasing tickets for the banquet can be found by contacting the WBCA or the inductees themselves.
Playing under father and Monroe head coach Lee Mitchell, Tom Mitchell helped guide the Cheesemakers to a state championship in 1965. He finished his high school career among the top players in school history in scoring and shooting percentages. He went to play in college at Wisconsin with former Monroe teammate Keith Burington. Tom Mitchell joins his father (1980) and Burington (2009) in the WBCA Hall of Fame. Monroe High School now has seven members in the WBCA Hall of Fame, which also includes Bob Anderegg (2008), Loren Homb (2010), Kevin Keen (2011), Dale Buvid (2018) and Pat Murphy (2020).
The 30 people picked were among seven different categories: Friends of the WBCA, Referees, Girl players, boys players, assistant coaches, head coaches and college coaches. Other selections included Cuba City assistant Steve Kaiser, Edgewood’s girls coach Lora Staveness, Beaver Dam coach Tim Chase, former Janesville Parker star and player of the year Mistie Bass, former Wisconsin Heights and Wisconsin Badgers forward Mike Wilkinson, and Nicholas Kartos, founder of WisSports.net.
