Monroe varsity improves to 9-4; 6 games added

MONROE — The Monroe boys varsity club hockey team used a big third period to escape Shaw Dec. 27, winning 5-4.

Blaze Janecke scored three times and added an assist to lead Monroe’s scorers sheet with four points. Hayden Roth added a goal and two assists, while Cade Janecke had a goal and an assist. Joshua Haight, Roman Bauer and Bryce Montgomery also recorded assists for Monroe. Jayden Johnson saved 36 shots.

Monroe led 1-0 after the first period and 2-1 entering the second intermission. Both teams scored three goals in a furious third period.

The win comes on the heels of a 9-1 loss to defending Division 1 state champion Verona Dec. 22. Ryan Molitor scored unassisted for Monroe’s only goal in that contest. Verona led 4-1 after the first period, then added four more goals in the second and another in the third. 

Just three days earlier, on Dec. 19, Monroe defeated Beloit 9-1. Blaze Janecke had four goals in that contest, while Roth, Molitor, Bauer, Cash Anderson and Cade Janecke also scored. Roth added four assists and Nathan Ratke had two assists. Molitor, Bauer and Haight also had assists in the blowout.

Monroe is now 9-4 on the season, with a New Years Eve game set for 1 p.m. at SLICE against New Berlin. Edgewood comes to town Jan. 2, and Milton will follow Jan. 4. Six more games were added to the schedule since the season began, with the club now scheduled to play 31 regular season games in all.
