MONROE — The Cheesemakers were a couple of flashes in the clouds away from securing their first win of the season on the pitch. Instead the game rolled on and Dodgeville-Mineral Point rallied to steal a 2-1 victory April 22 at T.R. Holyoke Field.
Monroe (0-8-1) grabbed an early 1-0 lead on a goal by Alex Badger off an assist from Heather Burkhalter in the 31st minute. The Cheesemakers reached halftime with the game tied, and in the opening minutes of the second half, flickers of lightning in the distance from impending storms paused both the varsity and junior varsity baseball games on adjacent fields.
The soccer game went on uninterrupted, and Dodgeville-Mineral Point (3-2-0) tied the score at the 58:30 mark. With less than five minutes left in regulation, Dodgeville-Mineral Point struck again. Lightning, meanwhile, ended the baseball games early.
Anna Latimer returned from injury to play goalie and had the net on lockdown in the first half for Monroe, stopping all three shots that came her way. Freshman backup goalie Kyla Ziolkowski took over in the second half and had two saves.
Kourtney Walter and Anika Einbeck each had shots on goal for Monroe, while Bader put two tries on net.
The next night, Monroe lost 2-0 to Evansville on the road. Latimer held Evansville (7-1-2) scoreless for 61 minutes despite 15 shots on goal, and Ziolkowski stopped four shots but allowed a pair of goals in 29 minutes of action. The Cheesemakers put just two shots on goal in the game.
