MONROE — Senior Jordan Montgomery capped his prep career with a pair of second-team all-conference awards in the Badger South. Montgomery earned marks for his play at running back and defensive back.
Junior linebacker Alex Witt was a second-team selection. Other Cheesemakers named honorable mention on offense were seniors Wade Sweeney and Ethan Kleckler and juniors Bodi Minder, Julian Gruber and Nick Bansley. Minder, Gruber, Sweeney, Bansley and sophomore Tyler Matley were honorable mention defenders.
Montgomery led the team with 81 tackles, while Witt had 78 tackles and 43 solo, including 10 tackles for a loss — also a team high. Wade Sweeney had a team-high three sacks and Matley led the Cheesemakers with a pair of interceptions.
Kleckler led the Cheesemakers with 790 rushing yards on the season with six touchdowns and a 4.9 yards per carry mark. Montgomery had 735 yards with 10 scores and averaged 6.8 yards per carry. Bansley had 456 yards on 54 carries (8.4 ypc) with five scores.
In conference play, Kleckler and Montgomery finished second and third in the league in rushing with 705 and 671 yards in seven games. Bansley was sixth, with all of his yards on the season coming in conference play. Stoughton’s Dwight Walker led the league with 798 yards rushing in conference matchups.
Monona Grove senior quarterback Jordan Bishop was named the league’s offensive player of the year, while Stoughton junior tackle Jack Nelson was the offensive lineman of the year.
Oregon senior linebacker John Klus was the Badger South defensive player of the year, with Monona Grove senior Sam Gronski named defensive lineman of the year. Klus led the league with 134 tackles in conference play. He had 189 tackles on the season.
Monroe finished the season 2-7 overall and 2-5 in conference play, finishing tied for fifth in the league. Monona Grove went undefeated during the regular season, with Oregon finishing second in the Badger South with just one loss.
Monona Grove earned 10 offensive all-conference selections, including seven on the first-team, and had 10 more defensive picks (five on first-team). Oregon had eight offensive selections and five defensive selections. Watertown had nine offensive players and eight defensive players honored. Stoughton had six offensive and six defensive selections. Madison Edgewood (14 total), Milton (13) and Fort Atkinson (3) rounded out the all-conference teams.
There were 105 total players honored in the league — 53 on offense and 52 on defense.
