LA CROSSE — Marshall was the Division 1 team champion at the annual Bi-State Classic in La Crosse held Dec. 29-30. Holmen was second and Stoughton was third. Luxemburg-Casco won the Division 2 title in front of Lodi. Monroe was 13th in D2 and 34th out of all 71 teams represented.

“This tournament is the largest wrestling event in Wisconsin in terms of the amount of wrestlers,” said Monroe coach Tom Witt. “To finish how we did is a credit to this team and the hard work that they have been doing. We also were down wrestlers due to injuries, we only had seven wrestlers competing out of the possible 14 weights.”

The Cheesemakers had two wrestlers place in the tournament: Senior Brady Schuh at 145 pounds, and junior Isaac Bunker at 285.

Schuh won his first three matches all by pin, but was pinned himself in the quarterfinal. In the consolation bracket, Schuh won by pin and a 7-3 decision to reach the semis, where he was pinned in the second period. In the fifth-place match, Schuh walked away the winner after a medical forfeit by Stratford’s Gavin Drexler.

Bunker received a first-round bye and then won back-to-back-to-back matches by pin. In the semifinals, Bunker was defeated by Stoughton’s Griffin Empey 11-1. Bunker lost his next match in the consolation semifinals by pinfall, but pinned Iowa-Grant/Highland’s Isaac Biba for the second time on the day in the fifth-place match.

“It was a good tournament for Isaac. He is still inexperienced in this sport and he continues to get better every time he steps on the mat,” Witt said.

Also wrestling for Monroe were Garrett Voegeli (2-2) at 120; Garrett Minder (1-2) at 106; Christian Schuh (1-2) at 132; Ryan Holst (1-2) at 138; and Jace Amacher (1-2) at 160.
