Monroe falls to Sauk in OT

PRAIRIE DU SAC — After a 1-for-7 powerplay performance against Kenosha, Monroe scored three powerplay goals against Sauk Prairie. The effort was not enough as the Cheesemakers fell to the Eagles 5-4 in overtime on Thursday, Dec. 21.

“The boys played very hard. It’s a game the boys felt we should have won,” Monroe head coach Barry Einbeck said. 

The first period was a wash, as each team scored two goals. Carter Nemergut and Cole Buholzer scored for Monroe, while Colin Harrington scored both goals for Sauk Prairie.

The Cheesemakers took a 4-2 advantage four minutes into the second period with two goals from Brady Stuart. The momentum shifted at the end of the second period. Thor Peterson notched a goal with five minutes left in the frame. Harrington then completed his hat trick in the third period, sending the game into overtime.

Five minutes into extra time, Gunnar Nachreiner secured the game for Sauk Prairie with an unassisted short-handed goal. 

Stuart and Brody Goode led Monroe skaters with two points each — Stuart from goals and Goode from assists. In net, Brock Brandli tallied 27 saves.

ROCK COUNTY FURY 3, METRO LYNX 2

MADISON — With a double overtime win on Thursday, Dec. 21, the Rock County Fury took control of the Badger Conference.

“This was a great team win for us that took everyone playing their part,” Fury head coach Luke Steurer said. “The girls adjusted to a different game plan going into this game and stuck with it all game. We had great defense from everyone and a lot of determination and grit tonight.”

Emma Kligora tied the game at two with 1:26 left in regulation. The first overtime was scoreless, although there were a combined 14 shots on goal between the two teams.

Just 46 seconds into the 3-on-3 double overtime, Emma Kligora evaded two Lynx defenders and scored top shelf on Addy Buzzell. With the win, Rock County gained sole possession of first in the Badger Conference. The Fury have 18 points to the Lynx’s 14.

Emma Kligora led all skaters with two goals. She is currently second in the state for most goals with 19 — just one shy of leader Makaela Reinke of the Superior Spartans. Emma Kligora is also eighth in the state with 10 assists, combining for 29 points, which is tied for third in the state.

Macy Murphy assisted Ava Kligora for the first goal of the game. Murphy is currently third in the state for assists with 12. With 11 goals and nine assists, Ava Kligora is ninth in the state for points.

Jillian Traver tallied 43 saves on 45 shots for a .956 save percentage. Traver is second in the state with nine wins — just one behind Kaylie Nault of the Superior Spartans. She is also fourth in the state with a .933 save percentage and eighth for 2.04 goals against average.

JANESVILLE 4, BELOIT MEMORIAL 3

BELOIT — Penalties hurt the Purple Knights in a Big Eight loss on Thursday, Dec. 21. Beloit spent 36 minutes in the penalty box on 10 infractions, 32 of which came in the third period alone. 

Goals from Max Allen and Gavin Brady gave Beloit a 2-1 lead going into the second period. There, Janesville gained a 3-2 advantage.

Cole Rowald tied the game at three in the third, but Drew King’s unassisted powerplay goal put the game away.

Seven different players registered a point for the Purple Knights — Brady, Payton Whalen, Max Allen, Marcus Allen, Jayden Piccione, Sam Rowald and Cole Rowald. Gentry Grant stopped 20 of 24 shots on goal for an .833 save percentage.
