Monroe falls; Cards, Birds start season strong

PORTAGE — The Cheesemakers lost to Portage in straight sets Aug. 30, 25-14, 25-16, 25-14.

Monroe served at a 91.1% rate with seven aces. Portage served at 94.6% and finished with 18 aces. The Warriors had more (assists 22-9) than the Cheesemakers. In total, Monroe committed 53 errors.

Brenna Aebly led Monroe with three aces, and Brinley Roidt finished with two. Addison Bartholf led the Cheesemakers with eight digs. Courtney Hartwig and Sophie Golembiewski finished with four kills each. 


Monticello 3, Albany 0

MONTICELLO — The Ponies routed the Comets in the Six Rivers East opener Aug. 30, 25-12, 25-9, 25-20.

Monticello had 19 aces as a team, while Albany had just two. Kelsy Grant had six aces and 25 assists for the Ponies, with teammate Ellie Gustafson tallying 15 kills and 14 digs. 

With the win, Monticello, the conference’s defending champion, moves to 6-0 on the young season.


Black Hawk 3, Barneveld 0

SOUTH WAYNE — The Warriors fought the Eagles tooth and nail in the Six Rivers East opener on Aug. 30, eventually completing a sweep, 25-20, 25-23, 26-24.

Black Hawk finished with a 92% service rate in the match. Mallory Peterson had two aces.

The Warriors also received two blocks from Veronica Cheatham, six kills each from Raylin Peterson and Mallorie Peterson, 13 assists from Ellie Edler and a pair of digs from Tara Wellnitz.


Darlington 3, Cuba City 1

CUBA CITY — The Redbirds are off to a strong start to the season. In the SWAL opener Aug. 30 at rival Cuba City, honorable mention ranking in the state, Darlington ousted the Cubans in four sets. 

Up next is a trio of road games over the first eight days of September, starting with Mineral Point (Sept. 1), Riverdale (Sept. 6) and Fennimore (Sept. 8). Darlington’s first home match is scheduled for Sept. 13 against Boscobel.


Brodhead opens the year 5-0, ranked No. 8

JANESVILLE — The Cardinals won the Janesville Invitational Aug. 27, going 5-0 on the weekend. Days later, Brodhead was ranked No. 8 in the Wisconsin Volleyball Coaches Association Poll, released Aug. 31.

Brodhead defeated Rock Valley rival Edgerton 2-1 on the opening day of the tournament, then swept Baraboo three times and Janesville Craig the rest of the way that weekend.

Up next is a road match at Beloit Turner on Sept. 8, with the home opener Sept. 13 against Whitewater.

New Glarus 1-1 at quad

RACINE — The Knights defeated Kenosha Christian Life 2-1 on Aug. 30, then was swept by The Prairie School in the following match.

New Glarus will host Waterloo on Sept. 6, then travel to Cambridge Sept. 8. A rivalry match at home against Belleville is slated for Sept. 13.
