Monroe extends winning streak to 8
Beloit picks up first Big Eight win

MONROE — With a pair of wins over the weekend, the Cheesemakers extended their winning streak to eight games. Monroe (12-7-1, 7-4 Badger Small) has three regular-season games left, including a conference game against Sauk Prairie on Feb. 6. If the Cheesemakers can beat the Eagles (15-8-0, 8-3), they would tie for second in the conference.

MONROE 8, STOUGHTON 3

STOUGHTON — Hans Brandt and Patrick Alt led Monroe past Stoughton on Saturday, Feb. 3, scoring four points each from two goals and two assists.  

The Vikings (2-18-1, 2-17-1) jumped out to a quick start, scoring just 59 seconds into the game. The rest of the period belonged to the Cheesemakers, as Brandt, Alt and Wyatt Janecke scored for a 3-1 lead.

Monroe outscored Stoughton 2-1 in the second frame with goals from Carter Nemergut and Alt. The Vikings’ goal came on a power play, as Cameron Newcomer went to the box for head contact.

The Cheesemakers added three more on in the third, one coming on a power play. Brandt scored his second, and Goode and Koehn their first.

Brant and Alt led all skaters with four points (2G, 2A). Brady Stuart tallied three points from assists. Three different Cheesemakers recorded two points — Janecke (1G, 1A), Koehn (1G, 1A) and Gavin Roth (2A). In net, Kyle Theorin made 32 saves to get the win.

MONROE 8, SOUTH CENTRAL 2

MONROE — A three-goal third lifted the Cheesemakers over the Navigators (3-18-0, 1-8 Badger Large) on Friday, Feb. 2.

Ethan Rosenstiel’s power-play goal was the only score in the first. Monroe led 3-1 after the second period with goals from Carter Nemergut and Brandt. 

The Cheesemakers peppered South Central goaltender Mason Bieri in the third, scoring five even-strength goals. Benjamin Erdley, Carson Kurschner and Janecke scored in a span of two and a half minutes. Following a Navigator goal from Casey Coopman, Brandt and Janecke capped the game with goals less than a minute apart.

Janecke (2G, 1A) and Alt (3A) led Monroe with three points. The pair are the Cheesemakers’ top point getters with 27 and 26 points, respectively. Theorin picked up another win, recording six saves. Monroe outshot South Central 62-22.

BELOIT 4, JANESVILLE 2

JANESVILLE — The Purple Knights came from behind to tally their first Big Eight win of the season on Thursday, Feb. 1. Beloit (8-15-0, 1-11) scored three goals in the third to upend Janesville (4-16-0, 1-9). 

Nathan Fiebig put Beloit on the board in the first period on an even-strength goal. Two goals from Bryce Sullivan in the second put Janesville on top 2-1. The third frame was all Beloit, as Brayden Lane tied the game just under two minutes in. Jaxon Walenga scored what proved to be the game-winning goal, and Payton Whalen put the nail in the coffin with the empty netter.

Lane (1G, 1A) and Preston Mayberry (2A) led the Knights with two points. Gentry Grant picked up the win, recording 25 saves.


GIRLS HOCKEY

ROCK COUNTY FURY 12, COULEE REGION 3

WEST SALEM — Rock County scored 12 goals on 27 shots en route to a nonconference victory on Saturday, Feb. 3. The Fury were 2-for-6 on the power play with one short-handed goal.

Emma Kligora scored the short-handed goal just under seven minutes into the game with an assist from Macy Murphy. Coulee’s Makenna Olson briefly knotted the game with an unassisted goal, but goals from Ava Kligora and Murphy put Rock County back on top 4-1.

Ava Kligora completed her hat trick with two goals in her team’s 5-score third. Her sister Emma Kligora finished her hat trick with two goals in the third. It was Ava’s second hat trick of the season and Emma’s third. The sisters combined for 13 points with seven goals and six assists. 

Murphy (2G, 1A) and Anna Cole (2G, 1A) recorded three points each. Jillian Traver picked up the win in goal with 16 saves.
