BELOIT — Despite just two champions, Monroe boys reclaimed a regional title with 126 points in the Division 2 Turner regional meet May 20. The Cheesemakers scored points in 26 of 28 entries, proving depth and versatility were on their side.

“Winning regionals is a pretty special team accomplishment, along the same lines as winning conference,” Monroe boys head coach Scott Mosher said. “Much of track and field has an individual feel to it, but conference and regionals really take a complete team to have success. In these meets everyone gets 28 entries plus four relays. So there are a lot of opportunities to score points if you are a well rounded team with depth.”

Kaden Kuester and Tre Dammen were the ‘star athletes,’ earning individual titles and runner-up finishes. Outside of their performances — and the 4x800 relay — all other athletes finished third or lower.

“After regionals, track becomes more individually focused. Teams that can win state don’t necessarily need depth or (to) be well rounded, you need to have star athletes,” Mosher said. “These two (Kuester and Dammen) clearly played a big role in the success, qualifying in multiple events with such high places. But we scored in 26 total entries, which is why we were able to win.”

Sugar River boys, who snapped Monroe’s seven-year regional-championship streak in 2023, took third with 102 points and three regional champions in five events. Brodhead-Juda boys finished fourth of eight teams with two regional champions.

Brodhead-Juda girls, who had won the regional title in 2023, came up just short against Edgewood (139-120). Stella Arn, Addison Yates and Kalena Reimer accounted for 74 of the team’s points. Monroe girls finished fourth (84 points) and Sugar River girls seventh of eight teams (50 points).

The top four athletes in each event qualify for sectionals at Portage on May 23. In sectionals, the top four entries in each event qualify for the WIAA State Meet at UW-La Crosse May 31-June 1.
