MONROE — The Monroe-New Glarus swim team picked up its first win of the season March 9, 95-75 against Monona Grove.
The Cheesemakers only scored wins in 4 of 11 varsity events, but MG was top-heavy in scoring, and MNG had a balanced competition and up down the lineup. The Cheesemakers ended the night with 9 second place finishes and another 7 third place spots.
“The team is getting into the swing of things more, the girls did a great job tonight against Monona Grove,” MNG coach Kendra Kalvin said. “We had a lot of time drops from the start of our season just a couple of weeks ago which shows me that the work they are putting in is paying off.”
MNG pulled in both first and second place in the 200-meter medley relay. The quartet of Kaitlyn Elgin, Karley Michels, Keeley Mulligan and Anna Newcomer took first place with a time of 2:18.24.
Riley Hoesly, a freshman for MNG, won the 200-IM with a time of 2:42.93. She was second in the 100-free, less than 2.5 seconds behind Brianna Back of MG, one of the state’s top swimmers in each of the past four years.
MNG senior and team captain Francesca Schiro took first place in the 400-free with a time of 5:03.67. Schiro was second in the 200-free (2:23.25), five seconds off the pace of MG’s Morgan Heilman.
“Francesca Schiro swam the 400-freestyle for the first time in a while and had an impressive swim and time,” Kalvin said.
In the 100-breaststroke, MNG took the top two spots, with Michels finishing ahead of teammate Peyton Yaun by half a second at 1:24.94.
“Karley Michels also had a great meet and dropped time in her main event, the 100-breaststroke,” Kalvin said.
Mulligan, a freshman, was second to Back in the 50-free (31.96), with senior teammate Kendra Wenger third (32.43). Wenger and Taylor Rufer went third and fourth in the 200-freestyle. Samantha Schiro was second in the 100-butterfly (1:18.93), with Yaun and teammate Elsa Schaefer taking the next two spots. Elgin was second in the 100-backstroke (1:16.30), with Samantha Schiro third and Rufer fourth. In the 200-IM, Elgin was third and Michels fourth.
Monroe’s 200-free and 400-free relay teams took both second and third.
“It’s great to see the girls get to enjoy their time together and focus in on swimming,” Kalvin said.
Monroe is back in the water March 16 against Stoughton.
