FENNIMORE — Monroe won the boys and girls team titles at the Fennimore Invitational May 10.

The Cheesemakers finished with 106.83 points on the girls side, ahead of Fennimore by just 10.5 points. Darlington (61) was fifth, Albany (30) 11th and Pecatonica-Argyle (12) 12th out of the 14 teams at the invite. On the boys side, Monroe (133.5) beat River Ridge (112) by 21 points. Darlington (80) was fourth, Pecatonica-Argyle (34) ninth and Albany (5) 13th of 14 teams.

“There is great track and field in southwestern Wisconsin — where a lot of points for the state meet will come from, including several individual state champions,” said Eric Jubeck, Monroe’s girls coach. “We were able to use a combination of our top athletes performing well to go along with team depth. To be able to see this many teams and solid performances, it gave us an idea of where we are and where we need to improve. Of the 18 events, we scored in 17 events — a rather impressive statistic.”

Monroe freshman Aleigh Zettle won the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.64 seconds. Cassville’s Anna Kartman (14.02) was second. Zettle also was sixth in the 400, fourth in the pole vault and eighth in the long jump.

“Aleigh Zettle showed real talent in the 100 by blowing away the competition. She was put in two new events, and at one time had three places to be at the same time. This is the hardest part of the sport — navigating the timeline of being a true track and field athlete, and Aleigh is figuring this out,” Jubeck said.

Darlington’s Raquel Reuter won the 800 (2:29.81), less than a second ahead of Fennimore’s Lauryn Bunn (20:30.64), while Monroe’s Bre Lambert (2:33.25) was third.

In the 100-hurdles, Monroe’s Taylor Jacobson (17.82) finished just behind Fennimore/s Delanee Klaas (17.08). Klass also won the 300-hurdles (49.55).

Darlington’s quartet of Lilee McGowan, Gabby Leuchtenmacher, Abby Solverson and Zoie Zuberbuhler won the 400-meter relay with a time of 56.31 seconds. Monroe’s Brenna Aebly, Lydia Butler, Jacobson and Lambert finished second in the 800-relay (1:56.57), just a half second being Benton-Scales Mound-Shullsburg (1:56.01) and just 6/100ths of a second ahead of Darlington’s Jaidyn Evenstad, Alyza Johnson, Solverson and Zuberbuhler, who teamed up for third (1:56.63).

The Redbirds won the 3,200-relay (10:58.00), with Judith Meister, Allyson Meyers, Shayla Gould and Reuter teaming up. Monroe’s team of Alyssa Roelli, Kaitlyn Elgin, Jenna Brower and Sierra McGuire were second (11:39.60).

Jacobson finished second in the triple jump (33 feet, 3.5 inches), one foot shy of champion Brynlee Nelson of Fennimore.

“Taylor Jacobson stepped in and showed the potential that she has to be great in this sport.  Her 100-hurdle race and triple jump both earned her spots on the state honor roll,” Jubeck said. “The exciting part is she is just figuring these events out.”

Monroe’s Riley Hartwig won the shot put (36-11) by 31 inches, while Albany’s Jada Flannery won the discus (100-02) by 15 inches.

“Riley Hartwig is continuing her strong senior year with a season PR shot put throw of 36-11 — and she keeps improving every meet. So very happy for Riley as our only senior to see her having success,” Jubeck said.

On the boys side, Monroe’s Egor Sereda edged out teammate Lucas Flom in the 100 by 9/1,000ths of a second (12.071-12.080). Caden Blum, a Monroe freshman, was fourth (12.23).

Pecatonica-Argyle’s David Tisch won the 400 with a time of 54.56. Monroe’s Lucas Sathoff was the winner in the 800 (2:07.20), with Tisch taking third (2:12.50). In the 1,600, Darlington’s Rhett Reuter was first overall (4:46.99). Cristian Gutierrez of Darlington was third in the 3,200 (12:05.04), with Benton-Scales Mound-Shullsburg senior Niko Karavergos (10:12.69) dominating the field.

In the 110-high hurdles, Monroe junior Jason Carpenter took first by a tenth of a second at 17.97. Carpenter also won the 300-meter hurdles (45.73) just 4/10ths of a second.

Cuba City won the 400-meter relay (48.49), just ahead of Darlington’s grouping of Cooper Crist, Carter Murray, Carver Fitzsimons and Eason Evenstad (48.82).

In the 800, Monroe’s quartet of Flom, Sathoff, Sereda and Charlie Wiegel took first (1:37.46) by more than a second and a half.

Darlington’s Ethan Thompson, Michael Thompson, Caleb Weaver and Rhett Reuter won the 3,200-relay (9:03.30) and were second (3:46.08) in the 1,600-relay behind Cuba City (3:41.61). Monroe’s Jakar Broitzman, Caden Blum, Jordan Klocke and Flom were third (3:52.19) in the 1,600.

Wiegel was second in the high jump for Monroe at 5-6, finishing behind Cuba City’s Jack Misky. Evenstad (20-03.5) won the long jump for Darlington. Monroe’s Caleb Bunker (46-11) won the shot put by nearly five feet.

In other track and field competition, Sugar River won a Capitol Conference dual at Wisconsin Heights May 11. The girls team outscored the Vanguards 102-38, while the boys won 124-62.
