MHS defeats Parker in season opener; NG bests Brodhead in OT

JANESVILLE — The Monroe boys basketball team opened its winter season with a 59-52 win over Janesville Parker Dec. 28.

Senior Cade Meyer led the way with 21 points. Carson Leuzinger added 12 points and JT Seagreaves chipped in 9.

The Cheesemakers, ranked 10th in Division 2 in the most recent Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association poll, led 31-28 at halftime and held on down the stretch in the second half. Monroe’s highly anticipated game against Division 4 No. 1 Cuba City was canceled due to COVID-19 from within the Cubans program. The Cheesemakers were set to host Division 4’s fourth-ranked Darlington Jan. 4, then travel to Watertown Jan. 9.


New Glarus 67, Brodhead 61, OT

BRODHEAD — The Glarner Knights came back from a 4-point halftime deficit to send the Dec. 29 game into overtime, then held the host Cardinals to just one point in the extra session.

Brodhead led 36-32 at the break, but the game was all squared away at 60 at the end of regulation.

New Glarus big man Dain Walter scored 25 points to lead all scorers. Knights teammate Carter Siegenthaler added 12 points and Darris Schuett had 11.

Owen Leifker led Brodhead with 23 points. Conner Green chipped in with 17 and Brady Malkow notched a double-double in the loss with 10 points and 10 rebounds.


Evansville 67, Monticello 59

EVANSVILLE — The Ponies suffered their first loss of the season Dec. 29 despite a career day for senior Peter Gustafson. 

Evansville led 38-24 at halftime, but Monticello clawed back into the game in the second half. Gustafson tied his career-high in points with 39. He’s averaging 28.5 points per game this season through eight games. Rudy Wicker added 10 points for Monticello. Ryan Thompson paced Evansville with 20 points.


Shullsburg 62, Argyle 52

BENTON — At the Mike Alexander Christmas Classic Jan. 2, Argyle lost both games. In the 10-point defeat to Shullsburg, Willie Helfvogt scored a team-high 19 points, while Mason Svendsen added 14.

Shullsburg’s Brandon Hoppman had 16 points.

The Orioles led the Miners 31-24, but Shullsburg out-scored Argyle 38-21 in the second half.


Benton 67, Argyle 49

BENTON — The Orioles found themselves down 37-29 at halftime and couldn’t recover against the host Zephyrs. 

Benton had four players in double figures, led by Dominick Cummins, who had 20 points. Helfvogt led Argyle with 19 points, including four 3-points. Connor Carius had 11 points for the Orioles.

In other area games, No. 4 Darlington rolled both of its opponents at the Lancaster Tournament Dec. 29. The Redbirds defeated host Lancaster 71-50 and dominated Royall 69-26. Black Hawk dropped a pair of games during the week as well, falling to Mineral Point 84-50 on Dec. 30, two days after dropping a 44-27 decision at Platteville.
