MONROE — The Monroe girls basketball team is hosting an event for a local student battling cancer.
Kaelie Wunschel, Monroe, was recently diagnosed with neuroblastoma, a rare form of childhood cancer.
On Jan. 10, Monroe is hosting “Kaelie the Incredible Girls Basketball Night” against Stoughton. At halftime, the MHS Student-Athlete Leadership Team will be running a Miracle Minute. Fans attending are encouraged to show support by wearing “Kaelie the Incredible” t-shirts. Kaelie will be introduced as an honorary starter for the varsity game if she is able to attend.
All proceeds and donation dollars will go to the Wunschel family. Kaelie’s older sister, Megan, is the video coordinator for the Cheesemakers.
There are about 700 cases of neuroblastoma diagnosed each year, with the majority affecting those under the age of 5. Kaelie has started chemotherapy treatments as a part of an aggressive plan that will span the next 18 months, according to a GoFundMe page set up in her honor: Kaelie the Incredible. She is being seen by the UW American Family Children’s Hospital in Madison.
