MONROE — The Six Rivers East Conference released its All-Conference list, and Pecatonica’s Jameson Johnson was named Player of the Year, while head coach Jim Strommen was named Coach of the Year.
In 43 years, Strommen has compiled a 646-225 record and is one win away from the all-time wins record. He’s led the Vikings to 19 conference titles, 13 regional titles and the program’s first sectional championship and state appearance. Strommen has coached numerous players that made the All-Conference list, including 2023 Player of the Year Johnson.
Jameson Johnson tallied 30 hits*, including a team-best six home runs for a .937 slugging percentage. He drove in 25 runs while scoring his own 34. Johnson was one of five Vikings to hit over .400 with a .476 batting average. On the bump, the junior led the team with 69 strikeouts. He posted a 6-1 record with a 0.71 ERA. When not pitching, Johnson manned shortstop or third, where he had a .911 fielding percentage.
Johnson is joined by teammates Carson Kurschner, Coy Ruegsegger, Elijah Knutson, Max Steele and Tyler McKeon on the First Team.
At leadoff, McKeon led the team in average (.513), runs (39), hits (39), doubles (7), triples (3) and stolen bases (26). Catcher Knutson tallied 27 hits in 58 at-bats for a .466 batting average. He led the team in walks (16) and on-base percentage (.581). Cleanup hitter Ruegsegger led the team with 26 RBIs. In 47 innings, he’s given up just one earned run for a miniscule 0.15 ERA. In 12 games, Ruegsegger has compiled an 11-0 record. Kurschner hit .351 through 22 games with 20 hits and 16 RBIs. He is one of four players with a fielding percentage over. 900 with a .944. Steele also drove in 16 runs while scoring 14 of his own. In 62 at-bats, he’s struck out just nine times.
All of Pecatonica’s First-Team All-Conference selections have scored more than 10 runs, tallied more than 15 hits and driven in more than 10 runs.
Lukas Rue was the lone Honorable Mention pick for Pecatonica. The junior tallied 15 hits with 10 RBIs for an even .300 batting average.
Argyle had three First-Team All-Conference selections in Ike Waage, Max Godfrey and Will Helfvogt. First baseman Helfvogt led the Orioles in hits (19), doubles (5), RBIs (9) and batting average (.352). Godfrey proved a valuable two-way player, as the junior scored a team-high 15 runs with 25 stolen bases. On the bump, he struck out 127 batters in just 60 1/3 innings pitched, an average of 2.1 strikeouts per inning. On the season, Godfrey had two no-hitters. Waage, who hits .286 with 13 stolen bases, proved a reliable No. 2. He posted a 2-1 record with a 6.22 ERA.
Thomas Nelson received Honorable Mention recognition. The senior tallied seven hits with eight walks and eight stolen bases. Argyle finished third in the East standings with a 5-8 record. They defeated Monticello-Albany in the regional quarterfinal before falling to Potosi-Cassville.
Junior Carter Baumgartner was the lone First-Team All-Conference selection for Black Hawk. He led the team in nearly every offensive statistic, including runs (6), hits (12), triples (2) RBIs (3), walks (6), stolen bases (10) and batting average (.298). Teammates Dylan Haldiman and Jadeyn Pryce received Honorable Mention accolades. Haldiman led the Warriors on the bump with 49 strikeouts in 37 innings pitched. At the plate, he tallied six hits with three RBIs. Sophomore Pryce recorded five hits in 26 at-bats for a .192 batting average — tied for second best on the team.
Black Hawk finished 0-13 in conference and forfeited its regional game against Belmont.
Monticello-Albany had two players make the Honorable Mention list: Aidan Harvey and Brayden Bakken. Harvey, the team’s lone senior, led the Ponies in hit by pitch (7) while driving in six runs. His .213 batting average was second best on the team. Bakken, a leader at the plate and the rubber, recorded a team-best 14 hits, 18 runs, 16 walks and 12 stolen bases. He struck out 35 batters in 37 innings and posted a 2-5 record.
Monticello-Albany finished 4-9 in conference, marking a new program best in wins. The Ponies dropped their opening playoff game to Argyle.
Barneveld had five First-Team selections and four Honorable Mentions.
