BELOIT — Despite a slow start and empty first period, the Rock County Fury improved to 9-0 in conference with a 5-2 win over Badger Lightning on Thursday, Jan. 18.
“We got off to a slow start with throwing the puck around and not controlling it and skating like we need to,” Fury head coach Luke Steurer said. “It took us awhile to start getting some good shots on net and took until the second period for Emma Kligora to start the scoring.”
Emma Kligora broke the stalemate with an unassisted goal in the second period, and Macy Murphy added on 10 minutes later with another goal.
The Lightning’s Kayla Garbacz snuck one past Jillian Traver to start the third period, but the Fury responded with three straight goals. Freshman Sophia Young scored her second goal of the season, followed by a goal each from Kligora and Murphy.
Garbacz tallied her second goal of the period, unassisted, but Rock County’s defense held strong for the final eight minutes.
In net, Traver tallied 22 saves for a .917 save percentage. Young led all skaters with three points from one goal and two assists.
JANESVILLE 3, MONROE 1
MONROE — Carter Nemergut’s lone goal in the second period was not enough, as Monroe dropped a nonconference game to Janesville on Thursday, Jan. 18.
“I thought it was a very even hockey game,” Monroe head coach Barry Einbeck said. “We had some very good chances to score but just couldn’t finish.”
Janesville received one goal each from Bryce Sullivan, Ethan Ransom and Skyler Swearingen.
In net, Brandli stopped 34 of 37 shots on goal for a .919 save percentage.
