Monroe boys co-op reaches 9 wins for first time in program history

MONROE — The Rock County Fury co-op entered the holiday break with a 6-2 record after splitting a pair of games. The Fury defeated the Stoughton Icebergs 4-1 Dec. 19 and then lost 5-2 to Fox Cities Stars at SLICE Dec. 21.

In the Dec. 19 win over Stoughton, the Fury fell behind 1-0 in the first period after an Aeryn Olson powerplay goal. By the end of the second period, the Fury led 3-1 thanks to goals by Albany’s Haley Knauf, Janesville Craig’s Claudia Boehlke and Monroe’s Anika Einbeck. In the third period, Albany’s Alyssa Knauf made it 4-1.

Einbeck and Haley Knauf each added two assists in the game, while Beloit Turner’s Samantha Wells also notched an assist. Beloit Memorial sophomore Olivia Cronin had 19 saves in goal.

Two days later, Fox Cities led 3-0 after the first period and went up 4-0 after two periods before the Fury could respond.

Einbeck scored on a powerplay goal off a pass from Beloit Memorial’s Sara Loerke halfway through the third to break up the shutout. Less than four minutes later Alyssa Knauff lit the lamp, with Haley Knauf and Einbeck adding assists. Fox Cities capped the win on a goal with just 74 seconds to play.

Cronin took the loss in net, stopping 43 shots in the game. The Fury were outshot 48-24.


Boys co-op topples Stoughton, La Follette

MONROE — For the first time in program history, the Cheesemakers have notched nine wins in the regular season — and it took only 10 games to get there.

The Monroe co-op took care of business before the break, pounding Stoughton 10-4 Dec. 19 before toppling Madison La Follette/East 8-0 four days later.

In the Dec. 19 win over Stoughton at SLICE, the Cheesemakers got contributions from all over the ice. Orangeville’s Cade Janecke had two goals in the first period, while Monroe’s Payton Stauffacher and Jared Dillon each cashed in a goal, as did New Glarus junior Cooper Dreyfus.

Monroe led 5-1 after the first period and 7-3 after two. Janecke capped a hat trick less than four minutes into the second period, and Orangeville’s Hayden Roth scored the first of his four goals later in the period. Roth would add three goals in the third — including two within six seconds of each other.

Notching assists for the Cheesemakers in the rout were Janecke (3), Roth (2), Stauffacher (2), Roman Bauer (2), Kaiden Klitzke (2), Dillon (2) and Ty O’Connor (1). Heath Bear had 21 saves for Monroe as the Cheesemakers outshot Stoughton 57-25.

In the Festivus shutout of La Follette/East, six different Cheesemakers scored goals. Roth and Stauffacher each scored twice, while Dillon, Dreyfus, Sam Pecoraro and Brady Smith each added goals. Assisting for Monroe were Janecke (4), Dillon (2), Stauffacher (2), Dreyfus (1), Logan Roth (1) and Aiden Grey (1). Between the pipes, Bear finished with 25 saves.
