BELLEVILLE — Raider fans had many reasons to celebrate at the Capitol South Conference Quadrangular on Thursday, Jan. 11. Sugar River claimed back-to-back titles with wins over Cambridge (66-12), Marshall (66-15) and Waterloo (59-21).

“It’s a great achievement for the program,” Sugar River head coach Peter Swenson said. “It shows the hard work and dedication that the team has put in, during the off season and in season, has its rewards.”

Endres (120), ranked No. 5 in Division 2 for his weight class, also earned his 100th career win with a forfeit against Marshall. Entering the night, Endres needed just two more wins to reach the mark. He received two forfeits before pinning Waterloo’s Avery Skalitzky in three minutes.

“It felt amazing to reach 100 wins in front of the home crowd,” Endres said. “It felt amazing to get my hand raised knowing I have reached a big goal of mine. Getting the pin against Waterloo almost felt like my true 100th win.”

Endres was one of nine wrestlers to go 3-0 on the night, including Zech Bair (113), Mason Mau (138), Brennan Keyes (150), Cayson Helwig (157), Ryker Swenson (165), Trei Udelhoven (175), Garrett Pauli (215) and Isaac Erb (285).

Helwig, Pauli and Erb were the only victorious wrestlers that did not receive a forfeit on the night. Helwig recorded two pins with a tech fall, Pauli three pins and Erb three pins, too.

While Sugar River has the Capitol South title in hand, there is more at stake in the conference meet on Feb. 3 at Lake Mills, which includes both north and south teams. There, individual champions will be crowed. An overall winner will also be determined, based on team points. According to coach Swenson, Lodi has won the tournament for nearly 20 years.

“We are hoping to challenge them this year,” he said.
