DHS aims to be competitive each match

Darlington sophomore Josie Meister finished first in the opening dual match of the season against Southwestern-Cuba City Aug. 13, shooting a 48.

DARLINGTON — The Redbirds enter the links this fall with a singular focus: To compete.

Darlington returns five golfers to its girls team, including two all-conference talents, senior Josie Thomas and sophomore Josie Meister. Seven other newcomers have joined the fray this season as well.

“The goal for the team this year is to be competitive in every meet and progress as the season goes on,” said Molly Rice, now in her sixth year at the helm. “Our greatest strength will be our experience. We return five letterwinners and two all-conference golfers, who all will bring tremendous leadership.”

Thomas was a second-team all-conference pick last year and went on to qualify for sectionals. Meister was an honorable mention all-conference pick. Senior Sadie Gollmer, junior Alexis Bridges and sophomore Sophie Wiegel also gained varsity experience last fall.

Newcomers include senior Lin West, juniors Juliana Nethery, Laura Weaver and Chance Lange, sophomores Erica Meylor and Sydney Weber and freshman Briana Nethery.

“Our biggest challenge will be finding consistency throughout the season because golf is a sport with a lot of ups and downs,” Rice said.

Rice expects the entire conference to be very competitive this year.

“Wisconsin Dells will be looking to win another conference title and should be very tough again,” Rice said.

In the season opener Aug. 13 at Darlington Country Club, the Redbirds defeated Southwestern-Cuba City 227-239. Meister was the medalist with a 48, and Thomas’ 52 was the second-best score of the day. Bridges carded a 63, while Weaver and Wiegel each shot a 64.

On the junior varsity side, Juliana Nethery had a 65.

Up next for the Redbirds is the home Ringen Invite Aug. 20, and then a five-team dual Aug. 27 at home.

Regionals are slated to be played Sept. 29 or 30, with sectionals Oct. 4-6. The state championship location has yet to be determined, but the event will take place Oct. 11-12.
