Capitol announces All-Conference Teams

Alex Atwell named Player of the Year in the Capitol South for track and field.

NEW GLARUS — The Capitol Conference announced its complete All-Conference list on Monday, June 19, which included Players of the Year Alex Atwell and DeMarcus Conner for Sugar River Track and Field.

Conner was also named First-Team in the 400-meter dash, for which he qualified for state, and Second-Team for the 200-meter dash. Atwell was also named First-Team for the 100-meter hurdles, an event she placed third at during the state meet, Second-Team in the high jump and part of the First-Team 4x100 and 4x200 relays. Both squads qualified for state. The 4x100 relay team also included Gracie Atkinson, Grace Nommensen and Elle Lancaster. The 4x200 relay team also included Atkinson, Nommensen and Addison Edge. 

Other First-Team All-Conference Raider athletes include Carter Scholey (1600- and 3200-meter run), Jack Erickson (300-meter hurdles) and Lawrence Vasquez (high jump). The following athletes made Second-Team All-Conference: Jack Erickson (100-meter dash), Thomas Nelson (3200-meter run), Cade Thayer (high jump), Girls 4x800 relay (Camryn Arnett, Ruth Marty, Lucy Melvin, Alora Spiegel), Grace Nommensen (100-meter dash), Alora Spiegel (1600-meter run), Addison Edge (300-meter hurdles), Gracie Atkinson (200-meter dash and long jump) and Ruthie Zuber (3200-meter run).

Both Sugar River boys and girls track and field teams were conference champions. 


GIRLS SOCCER

Six-time conference champions Sugar River girls soccer had 10 players make the All-Conference list. Anya Brenkman, Bella Brenkman, Jenna Gentilli and Audrey Bruggeman made First-Team. 

Anya Brenkman, a sophomore forward, scored 38 goals, setting a new school record. She also chipped in 10 assists for 86 points. Bella Brenkman, a junior midfielder, scored 11 goals with 13 assists for 35 points. Gentilli, another junior midfielder, led the team with 17 assists paired with four goals for 25 points. Bruggeman, a sophomore defender, assisted in four goals from the back line.

Hannah Boldebuck, Annika Ziperski, Lainey Winkers and Addison Lutz made Second-Team. Boldebuck, a sophomore forward, was second on the team with 17 goals. Ziperski, a senior midfielder, chipped in seven points, and junior goalkeeper Lutz recorded a .822 save percentage with a 1.20 goals allowed average.

Seniors Lola Endicott and Tenley Faber received Honorable Mention recognition.


BASEBALL

New Glarus, conference champions for the first time since 1997, had three players make First-Team All-Conference. 

Senior outfielder Easton Dreyfus was second on the team in runs (20), hits (18) RBI (15) and stolen bases (7). He batted .310 with 14 walks. Junior Leyton Mihlbauer proved valuable at the plate and on the bump. He led the team with a .392 average with 20 hits, 10 stolen bases and 18 walks. In 29 2/3 innings pitched, Leyton Mihlbauer struck out 28 batters and walked 10. He posted a 4-2 record with a team-best 1.18 ERA. Sophomore Patrick Alt was another two-way player for the Knights. He tallied 20 hits, drove in a team-best 21 runs and batted at a .339 clip. On the bump, he pitched 62 2/3 innings and struck out 58 batters. Alt compiled a 6-2 record with a 2.01 ERA.

Junior designated hitter Zander Hauser was the lone Second-Team All-Conference selection. He was 7-for-27 at the plate for a .259 batting average. Hauser drove in six runs and drew four walks.

Seniors Ethan Friedrich and Owen Palmer, along with freshman Ashlin Mihlbauer, received Honorable Mention accolades.

For Monticello-Belleville golf, Joshua Potter was the lone honoree. The Junior made Second-Team All-Conference.
