Breaking: WIAA cancels remaining winter playoffs
Breaking

The WIAA has canceled the remainder of the winter sports season after a late night teleconference with board members. The ruling was in direct response to limiting crowds for fear of the rapidly spreading coronavirus.

The meeting came after the conclusion of the boys sectional semifinal games and Day 1 of the three-day girls state tournament. Black Hawk, the defending state champions in Division 5, were to play the first game of Day 2 at 9 a.m. that will not happen.

The WIAA will release more information later, but it appears this basketball championships will be left vacant for 2020.

In the days and hours prior to the announcement, the WIAA first announced limited spectators at tournament events. Thursday afternoon, the Kohl Center was no longer an option for the boys tournament, which was to be held March 19-21. After the final girls semifinal game March 12, at about 10 p.m., the board met and came to it's conclusion to end the winter season.

Tickets for the WIAA Girls and Boys State Basketball tournaments will be refunded in full. Please allow staff time to make these refunds and contact the WIAA office only if you do not see a refund to your account within two weeks of the tournament.

Any tickets purchased at school will be refunded by your school and not the Resch Center or the WIAA.

More information to come out during the weekend and will be published in the March 18 edition of the Monroe Times.
