SOUTH WAYNE — Black Hawk-Warren got back on the winning track in Week 3, handing Iowa-Grant a 56-0 loss Sept. 3.

“We played much better in all areas tonight,” said Warriors coach Desie Breadon, whose team lost in Week 2 to Marshall. “We took care of the football, played assignments on defense better, and continued to improve our special teams.”

Against Iowa-Grant, the Warriors defense and special teams aided the offense all night. The average starting field position for BHW was on Iowa-Grant’s 42-yard line, while the Bulldogs repeatedly were pinned to within their own 25 — a difference of 33 yards.

“We shut down their run game early to force Iowa-Grant to be one dimensional and then got pressure and sacks on their quarterback,” Breadon said. “One of the big keys on offense was dominating the line of scrimmage.”

Landen Mahoney opened the scoring with a 26-yard touchdown at the 8:29 mark in the first quarter. Minutes later Lucas Milz made it a two-score game with a 6-yard TD run. Milz added scores from 4- and 6-yards out in the second, and Warriors QB Brayden Bohnsack connected with Elijah Shelton for a 12-yard passing TD with 5:40 to go before halftime.

In the second half, Mahoney scored on a 32-yard rush in the third quarter, and Jovanny Erickson plunged in from a yard out with 4:52 left in the frame.

“We started faster than we had the first two games and played with more enthusiasm. We got more experience for all of our players. I was really happy with how all of the guys played, especially our back-ups. As usual, we were happy with the results, but not satisfied,” Breadon said because he knows his squad needs to continue to improve in all areas.

Black Hawk-Warren was a perfect 7-for-7 on two-point conversion tries, with Mahoney running in on five, and Milz and Erickson each with one conversion run. The Warriors had 296 total offensive yards and 10 first downs. Iowa-Grant was held to just three first downs and negative-17 total yards, including a -31 mark on rushing attempts.

Mahoney had 94 yards on just six rushing attempts. Milz had 81 yards on 16 carries. Bohnsack finished 3 of 6 passing for 54 yards and added anther 31 yards on five runs. Antron Evans had 3.5 sacks and eight tackles on defense. As a team, the Warriors had 6.5 sacks.
