FENNIMORE — Black Hawk-Warren’s 27-game win streak came to a close in a 30-22 Week 1 loss at Fennimore March 26.
With both teams knotted up at 22, a fumbled punt return by Black Hawk led to a 45-yard recovery and score for Austin Horn with 4:34 left in the third quarter. The Eagles would then hold strong defensively, getting a pair of defensive stands and a strip-sack by Jacob Henkel, and then an interception by Druw Fifrick to seal the game.
Max Kenney was 14 of 28 passing for 199 yards with two TDs and an interception for Fennimore. Kenney’s father Robert had recently died from cancer, and Black Hawk-Warren gifted the Eagles with helmet stickers “RK” in honor of Robert Kenney. Black Hawk-Warren was also playing while grieving the loss of an assistant coach, as it was the team’s first game without Mike Bainbridge, who died August 25 after his own battle with cancer.
The Warriors defense held Fennimore to just 38 rushing yards on 26 attempts. Lucas Milz ran for 126 yards on 18 carries for BHW, and scored all three Warrior touchdowns.
Fennimore struck first in the opening quarter, but BHW tied it at 6-6 just three minutes later. Both teams traded touchdowns the entire game, and went into halftime tied at 22.
Up next for the Warriors is an April 1 home opener against Southwestern, which lost 41-26 to Cuba City in Week 1.
NGM 47, MPGL 6
MONTELLO — The Glarner Knights opened the alt-fall season with a thorough road thumping March 26.
Monticello/Princeton/Green Lake scored the opening TD of the game on a 31-yard passing touchdown, but New Glarus-Monticello held the home team scoreless the rest of the night. NGM tied it at 6-6 in the first quarter on a 2-yard run by QB Darris Schuett.
In the second quarter, Schuett connected with Peter Gustafson on a 28-yard touchdown pass, and then later in the frame Schuett and Dominick Tollackson scored on a 15-yard pass to make it 20-6.
In the second have Schuett scampered for a 20-yard score and then threw another TD pass to Gustafson, this time from 11 yards out. Schuett ran in a third score from 5 yards out in the fourth quarter.
Schuett finished his night 16 of 25 passing for 201 yards and three scores with an interception. He added 46 yards rushing on seven carries. Cade Femrite had 10 carries for 90 yards. Gustafson had three catches for 62 yards, Jack Parman added another 90 yards receiving on seven catches and Nathan Streiff, the program’s all-time leading receiver, had five catches for 45 yards.
Defensively, Gustafson and Streiff each had an interception, with Streiff adding a team-high 11 tackles and a forced fumble.
Up next for the Knights is the home opener April 1 against Poynette.
Brodhead-Juda 33, Mount Horeb-Barneveld 33
WALWORTH — A canceled game against Deerfield led to the Cardinals scheduling a Saturday evening game March 27 against Mount Horeb-Barneveld.
Brodhead-Juda scored the first touchdown of the game on a 2-yard rush by Leon Saunders, but MHB’s Kolton Schaller connected with Joey Henderson from 45 yards out just three minutes later, with a two-point conversion briefly putting the Vikings ahead 8-6.
The Cardinals scored twice more in the second quarter on runs by Braden Cook from 1 and 3 yards. In the third quarter, Cook scored again from a yard out, and Cade Walker and Conner Green connected for a 40-yard score to open the fourth quarter.
Walker finished the night 9 of 11 passing for 123 yards. Saunders had 32 yards rushing on seven carries, and Cook had 32 yards on 14 totes. Gage Boegli did much of the dirty work, carrying the ball 12 times for 92 yards and adding three receptions for 36 yards.
The Cardinals defense held MHB to just 134 total yards, including -3 yards on 22 rushing attempts. Schaller was 11 of 24 passing with a TD and two interceptions.
Up next for Brodhead-Juda is a home against April 2 against Montello/Princeton/Green Lake.
Poynette 34, Parkview-Albany 6
POYNETTE — The Pumas jumped out to a 25-0 lead in the second quarter before the Vikings could get onto the board in the season opener March 26.
Luke Schwengels had an 80-yard fumble recovery for a score with 1:49 left before halftime for Parkview-Albany’s first score of the year.
In the third quarter, Poynette recorded a safety and added another TD for good measure.
The Pumas had 232 rushing yards on 42 carries, with 11 different players running the ball. The Vikings had 215 yards rushing on 47 carries, with Charlie Vogt leading the way with 128 yards on 15 totes. Korben Brown added another 43 yards on 15 carries. The Vikings were 0-for-6 passing in the game with two interceptions.
The Vikings are scheduled to play at Deerfield April 1 in Week 2.
