SHULLSBURG — Black Hawk capped an unbeaten regular season with a 32-2 win over Shullsburg in Week 9. The Warriors (8-0, 7-0) also won the Six Rivers Conference title outright.
Black Hawk led 12-2 at halftime before taking full control of the game in the second half.
Kyle Lovelace was 5 of 11 passing for 166 yards and two touchdowns for Black Hawk. Lovelace also added 57 rushing yards with a score. Colby Argall ran for 96 yards on 18 carries with a touchdown and Mitchell Quinn had nine carries for 86 yards. Brandon Schiferl had two catches for 79 yards and a touchdown and Rece Shelton had three catches for 87 yards and a touchdown.
The story of the game is Black Hawk’s defense, which allowed just 42 yards of offense. Schiferl, Argall and Shelton all had interceptions thrown by Shullsburg quarterback Jacob Berendes, the school’s all-time leading passer. Berendes was 19 of 37 passing for just 80 yards and the Miners were tagged for -38 rushing yards thanks to 50 yards lost via Warrior sacks.
Darlington 26, Boscobel 8
BOSCOBEL — The Redbirds picked up a much-needed win in Week 9 that launched them into the postseason.
Darlington (4-5, 3-3 SWAL) needed a win to get to .500 in conference play and earn a playoff berth.
The Redbirds took care of business in the second quarter, scoring three times to take an 18-0 lead into the half. Carter Lancaster scored on a 45-yard pass from freshman quarterback Braden Davis for the game’s first points with 9:29 left in the first half. Davis then connected with Stryker Fitzsimmons on a 15-yard pass to make it 12-0 with 4:07 left in the second. Blake Whalen then scampered 83 yards for the score with 2:02 left in the first half.
In the second half Carson Evenstad caught a 2-yard pass for a touchdown to make it 26-0 and effectively put punchless Boscobel (0-9, 0-6) out of contention.
Davis finished 3 of 8 passing for 65 yards. Whalen finished with 124 yards on seven carries to lead all runners. Darlington collected 267 yards of offense in the contest.
Defensively, the Redbirds allowed just three pass completions on 16 attempts for 24 yards and had three interceptions. Boscobel had 154 yards rushing as a team, but finished with 11 penalties for 115 yards. Darlington lost five fumbles in the game, while Boscobel lost one of four fumbles.
McFarland 42, Brodhead-Juda 13
MCFARLAND — The Cardinals needed a win in order to advance to the postseason but came across unbeaten McFarland in Week 9.
The Spartans led 21-0 after the first quarter and 42-6 at halftime. Brodhead’s final score, a two-yard run by Marco Bueno, came in the fourth quarter with a running clock.
Nick Naramore was 3 of 10 passing for Brodhead-Juda while Jeffrey Williams had 17 carries for 108 yards and an 18-yard reception.
Matthew Jostad had six catches for 148 yards and a touchdown for McFarland, which received a healthy performance from running back Tysen White (9 carries, 137 yards, TD) and quarterback Derek Schwarting (17 of 23 passing, 289 yards, 5 TDs).
Cambridge 49, New Glarus-Monticello 21
CAMBRIDGE — The Glarner Knights fell behind unbeaten Cambridge 28-0 early in the second quarter and were unable to cut away at the deficit.
Connor Siegenthaler was 16 of 27 passing for 234 yards and two touchdowns with two interceptions for the Glarner Knights. Trevor Gassman had 12 catches for 173 yards and two TDs and Nathan Streiff had six catches for 92 yards. Darris Schuett had seven carries for 44 yards and a score and was 2 of 3 passing for 31 yards. NGM had 366 yards of offense.
Cambridge quarterback Denver Evans was 8 of 12 passing for 252 yards and two touchdowns. The early backbreaker in the game came late in the first quarter when Cambridge return man Rudy Hommen returned a punt 98-yards for a touchdown that made it 21-0. Hommen added a kick return for a touchdown in the second quarter and also had an 82-yard TD reception before the half that made the score 42-7.
Clinton 40, Evansville-Albany 32
CLINTON — The Blue Jays finished the season winless, but only after turning the ball over on downs at the Clinton 24 with 2:46 remaining and a chance to tie the game.
Evansville-Albany trailed 40-18 in the fourth quarter but scored on back-to-back possessions to bring the deficit to 8 with 3:28 to play. The Blue Devils then recovered the onside kick at the Clinton 48 only to have the drive stall five plays later.
Clinton bullied its way to 365 rushing yards and added another 91 through the air. Evansville-Albany had 317 passing yards by quarterback Tyr Severson and 83 rushing yards. Both teams were 3 of 4 on fourth downs.
Matt Forster led the Blue Devils with 75 rushing yards on 18 carries. Sully Geske had 197 receiving yards and a score on eight catches and Seth Maag had 101 yards and three touchdowns on seven catches.
Clinton’s Jack Henschler had 182 yards and three touchdowns on 26 carries and Jackson Nelson had 156 rushing yards and two TDs on 27 carries.
Pecatonica-Argyle 56, Hurley 14
WAUPACA — The Vikings finished the regular season with an 8-1 record after a thumping of the Midgets in a nonconference game.
Pecatonica-Argyle led 22-0 after the first quarter and 49-0 at halftime. Hurley (5-4) is known for its running attack, averaging nearly 362 yards a game on the ground. But the Vikings stood head and shoulders above the Midgets in the trenches, holding Hurley to just 226 yards of offense and 222 rushing yards in the contest.
Quarterback Colton Schraepfer was 4 of 6 passing for 110 yards and a touchdown and added another 191 yards rushing on 11 carries with five TDs. Schraepfer also had a fumble recovery for a score with eight seconds left in the first half that made it 49-0. The Vikings collected 318 yards on the ground in the game, with Clay Ritschard picking up another 64 yards and a score and had a 17-yard receiving touchdown. Jaden Hendrickson had three catches for 93 yards.
