Argyle-Pec’s Butler scores career-high 34 pts against Juda

JUDA — Sophomore Kylie Butler keeps raising the bar, as she set a new career high 34 points in Argyle-Pecatonica’s 72-23 win over Juda on Thursday, Feb. 1.

Butler was 2-for-5 from 3-point range, tallied four assists and eight steals. Brooke Wellnitz also finished in double figures with 10 points and a team-best six rebounds and five assists. As a team, the No. 2-ranked Orioles (18-1, 6-0 Six Rivers East) forced 10 turnovers and recorded 32 steals.

On the other hand, Juda (1-18, 0-7) was led by Phoenix Homan with seven points.

CAMBRIA-FRIESLAND 51, JUDA 50

JUDA — The Panthers nearly grabbed their second win of the season in a nonconference game on Friday, Feb. 2.

Katie Brooks led Juda with 15 points, scored evenly over both halves. Anna Bartels also finished in double figures with 10 points. As a team the Panthers made five 3-pointers and went 3-for-10 from the free-throw line.

Conversely, Cambria-Friesland (3-15, 1-10 Trailways West) was 11-for-17 from the charity stripe with four 3-pointers.

ALBANY-MONTICELLO 66, PALMYRA-EAGLE 28

PALMYRA — The Comets built up a 30-point lead by halftime and continued rolling in the second half en route to a nonconference win on Saturday, Feb. 3.

Defense was the name of the game, as No. 4 Albany-Monticello (19-2, 5-1 Six Rivers East) grabbed 44 rebounds and stole the ball 15 times against Palmyra-Eagle (13-5, 6-3 Trailways South). 

Offensively, the Comets were 8-for-13 from the free-throw line and 12-for-25 beyond the arc. AM shared the ball, leading to 17 assists. 

Dalana Trumpy led with 17 points and seven rebounds. Molly Olson scored 16 points, going 4-for-5 from 3-point range. Alana Durtschi and Avary Briggs also crashed the glass for seven rebounds. Durtschi recorded eight assists, while Briggs tallied four steals.

WAUTOMA 51, BLACK HAWK 47

WAUTOMA — A short-handed Warrior crew pushed the Division 3 Hornets to the limit, but free throws proved to be the difference in a Wautoma win. Black Hawk was without four players, including starter Hailey Wellnitz. 

The Warriors (8-12, 2-5 Six Rivers East) outrebounded the Hornets (16-5, 6-2 South Central) 43-27, leading to 13 second-chance points and 28 points in the paint.

Maddy Lange finished with 16 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double. She also had four deflections and three steals. Maddy Place scored 12 points with nine rebounds. Kendra Haldiman chipped in five assists.

BARNEVELD 56, BLACK HAWK 47

BARNEVELD — The Warriors had Eagle Izabel Durst figured out in their first meeting, but the sophomore went off for 25 points in a Barneveld (9-11, 3-3 Six Rivers East) win on Thursday, Feb. 1. In addition, Black Hawk (8-12, 2-5) committed 26 turnovers and 21 fouls.

“It was not our best showing,” Black Hawk head coach Steve Herbst said. “We fought back after getting into an early hole, but there was not enough in the tank. We are fighting injuries and sickness right now but not an excuse for all those turnovers we had.”

Haldiman led the Warriors with 14 points, going 3-for-6 from beyond the arc. Lange scored 13 points with six rebounds. Veronica Cheatham led on the glass with seven rebounds. As a team, Black Hawk was 7-for-14 from 3-poing range and 14-for-22 from the line. 

NEW GLARUS 77, WISCONSIN HEIGHTS 32

NEW GLARUS — The No. 9-ranked Knights were clicking on all cylinders in their Capitol South Conference win over the Vanguards on Thursday, Feb. 1. New Glarus (17-2, 7-0) forced 16 turnovers and nabbed eight steals against Wisconsin Heights (4-13, 1-6). Offensively, the Knights were 7-for-18 from beyond the arc and 16-for-21 from the free-throw line.

Lindsey Schadewalt finished with 35 points and 10 rebounds for a double-double. She was 8-for-9 from the line and 3-for-6 from 3-point range. Elle Lancaster also drained three 3s in her 13-point total. Bella Brenkman tallied six assists. 

IOWA-GRANT 54, DARLINGTON 53

LIVINGSTON — A pair of free throws from Iowa-Grant’s Adrienne Biddick proved to be the game winners, as Darlington was unable to score in the final minute of play of a conference loss on Thursday, Feb. 1. The Redbirds (13-7, 7-4 SWAL) missed three potential game-tying shots, finishing 34% from the field. On the other hand, Iowa-Grant (9-12, 5-6) shot 40.4% from the field.

Maddie Gratz led the Redbirds with 17 points, five deflections and eight steals. Jaidyn Evenstad, who scored 10 points, grabbed a team-best eight rebounds with six assists. Aubrey McCarthy also deflected five passes. 

In other local girls basketball action, Turner (16-4, 9-2 RVC) beat Brodhead (12-7, 6-4) 46-24 in a conference game on Thursday, Feb. 1.
