Cards, ’Birds suffer conference losses

MAUSTON — The Orioles opened the regular season with a 6-3 win over Lakeland at Woodside Sports Complex March 28.

Grace Ganshert got the win on the mound, throwing a complete game and allowing two hits and a walk to go with 13 strikeouts. One of the two hits was a homerun. The Orioles also committed a pair of errors in the field.

Alysabeth Lantz had a double for Argyle, which also got a timely single from Jayden Saalsaa. 

Lakeland is a Division 2 school from the Northwoods. Argyle’s weekend tournament against Benton-Shullsburg and Darlington was cancelled due to cold temperatures.


Pecatonica 16, New Glarus 2

NEW GLARUS — The Vikings opened up the season with a rousing 20-hit game against the Glarner Knights March 28.

Pecatonica scored two runs in the first, seven in the second, three in the third and four in the fourth inning. New Glarus scored a run in both the third and fourth innings.

Abby Loomis, Lexi McSherry, Joselyn White, Sam Ihm and Tessa Green each had three hits for Pecatonica, while Lily Busser had two hits and two walks. Each starter for Pecatonica reached safely twice and scored a run. Green had a triple and White had a double. The Vikings had eight steals as a team, including three from Loomis.

McSherry threw 117 pitches in five innings, scattering four hits and eight walks and striking out eight.

New Glarus used Maci Carney and Shea Klosterman-Havens on the mound. Carney threw 100 pitches in 2.2 innings, allowing 14 hits, eight walks and 14 runs with a pair of strikeouts. Klosterman pitched the final two, allowing five hits and two runs with no walks.

Zoe Moen was 2-for-3 at the plate with a double, and Faith Bump had two steals for the Knights.


Whitewater 11, Brodhead 0

WHITEWATER — The Cardinals were one-hit by Sara Johnson and the Whippets March 28.

Johnson struck out 10 and didn’t record a walk. Brooke Teubert had Brodhead’s only hit.

Nataley Bump allowed 11 runs — just five earned — in 3.1 innings on the hill for Brodhead. Bump walked six, struck out two and gave up eight hits. Madisyn Kail got the final two outs for the Cardinals in the bottom of the fourth.

Whitewater scored four runs in the second, three in the third and four in the fourth.


Iowa-Grant 8, Darlington 5

LIVINGSTON — The Redbirds tried to rally late but came up empty in their game March 28.

Iowa-Grant scored three runs in the second, three in the third and two in the fourth. Darlington scored three in the top of the second and two more in the fifth.

The Redbirds collected five hits in the game, with Chloe Mulstein smacking a double and Alyssa Tuescher hitting a 3-run homer in the second. Darlington struck out 16 times at the plate and walked three times.

Tuescher took the loss on the mound, striking out two while allowing seven hits, five walks and hitting a batter in six innings.
