DELAVAN — Monroe (173.5) finished third of 11 teams in the Rock Valley Conference invite on Saturday, Feb. 3. Evansville, ranked No. 6 in Division 2, took the title with 233.5 team points.
The Cheesemakers wrestled 10 and each won at least two matches. Carson Menehan (132, 28-5) and Braedyn Nally (157, 25-11) earned individual conference championship titles.
Menehan, ranked No. 7 in Division 2, tallied two points and a narrow 2-1 decision over Clinton’s D’Angelo Vernon in the semifinals. Nally tallied two pins in under a minute before defeating Carter Ries of Big Foot-Williams Bay 7-4 in the championship.
Brodhead-Juda finished seventh with 109.5 team points and two champions in Marcus McIntyre (138, 32-2) and Joe Lohmar (150, 33-3).
McIntyre, ranked No. 8 in Division 2, recorded three pins. The first two occurred in the first period, while the third came with 12 seconds left in the match. Lohmar, ranked No. 3 in Division 2, pinned Dominic Staver of Big Foot-Willaims Bay in 52 seconds. He then picked up a 17-2 tech fall in the semifinals before edging Monroe’s CJ Schuh 7-3 in the championship.
SWC/SWAL CLASH
MINERAL POINT — Darlington-Black Hawk (157.5) finished fifth of 13 team in the SWAL/SWC Clash on Saturday, Feb. 3. Iowa-Grant/Highland, ranked No. 2 in Division 3, won the meet with 266 points.
Ethan Aird (126, 31-2) and Owen Seffrood (144, 38-0) were individual conference champions. Aird, ranked No. 1 in Division 2, earned a first-round bye. He then pinned Cole Pautz of Mineral Point in the first period. Aird then earned a 14-4 major decision and 11-4 decision for the title. Seffrood, ranked No. 1 in Division 2, also earned a first-round bye. He collected two pins, earning a spot in the championship. There, he defeated Ian Crapp, ranked No. 2 in Division 3, by a 3-2 decision.
Breylin Goebel (157, 35-3) finished second behind Fennimore’s Tristan Steldt by a 3-2 ultimate tiebreaker. During the tournament, Goebel, ranked No. 6 in Division 5, earned his 100th career win.
In the first ever girls SWC/SWAL Clash, Ashlynn Eckerman (152) took first. The freshman, ranked No. 9, pinned both Montana Joles of River Valley and Emma Mason of Belmont-Platteville.
TRAILWAYS
DEERFIELD — Parkview-Albany finished fourth of 14 teams in the Trailways Conference tournament on Saturday, Feb. 3. Markesan won back-to-back titles with 201 team points.
The Vikings had four individual champions, including the team’s first female conference champion in Sydney Coyne (285, 16-5). Coyne pinned Jay Claudio of Deerfield in the first period.
Danny Finley (126, 40-2) earned two byes. He then pinned both of his opponents in the first period for the title.
Sam Schwengels (190, 42-1) received a first-round bye. He then pinned his way to the championship. There, Schwengels narrowly defeated Noah Hanefeld of Markesan 3-2. Schwengels is currently ranked No. 3 in Division 3, and Hanefeld is ranked No. 14.
Like Finley, Wes Egan (215, 41-1) earned two byes. He then pinned both opponents for the title. Egan is currently ranked No. 6 in Division 3.
CAPITOL
LAKE MILLS — Sugar River (237) finished second behind Lodi (285), the No. 4 team in Division 2, at the Capitol Conference meet on Saturday, Feb. 3. The Raiders had four individual champions in Blake Endres (120, 38-6), Mason Mau (138, 35-2), Cayson Helwig (157, 29-14) and Ryker Swenson (165, 35-6).
Endres, who is ranked No. 4 in Division 2, earned a first-round bye. He then pinned Ethan Evenson of Lake Mills 30 seconds into the second period. In the championship, Endres won by 17-2 tech fall over Lodi’s Zander Kellogg, who is ranked No. 13.
Mau, who is ranked No. 3 in Division 2, also earned a first-round bye. He then pinned Hayden Struse-Clark of Lodi in the second period. In the championship, Mau beat Tucker Cobb of Marshall by a 14-8 decision.
Helwig went 3-0 with a pin and two narrow decisions. His pin came in the first period of a match against Colton Spiegelhoff of Lake Mills. Helwig’s decisions were 3-2 over Tony Omosebi of Lodi and 6-4 over Ryan Sturgill of Waterloo.
Swenson, who is ranked No. 4 in Division 2, recorded two pins to earn a spot in the championship match. There, he defeated Sam Schmidt of Lakeside Lutheran by a 5-2 decision.
SCENIC RIDGE & RIVERS
VIOLA — Pecatonica-Argyle (89.5) finished fifth of 11 teams in the Scenic Ridge & Rivers Conference at Kickapoo High School on Saturday, Feb. 3. Royall won the meet with 198 team points.
Aidan Gruenenfelder (113, 43-1) earned a first-round bye. He then pinned Tristan Hughes of Kickapoo-La Farge in the first period. In the championship, Gruenenfelder won by 19-3 tech fall over Cashton’s Parker Mlsna. Gruenenfelder is currently ranked No. 3 in Division 3 behind two seniors who are committed to wrestle in college.
Lukas Orloff (120, 35-5) pinned his way to the title, the quickest occurring in the quarterfinals. Orloff is currently ranked No. 8 in Division 3.
Regional wrestling begins for these six teams on Saturday, Feb. 10. Monroe, Brodhead-Juda, Darlington-Black Hawk and Sugar River will travel to Dodgeville, while Parkview-Albany and Pecatonica-Argyle will head to Mineral Point. The top four wrestlers in each weight class advance to sectionals on Saturday, Feb. 17.
