SCWA Activities

SCWA offers winter activities seven nights a week at the indoor facility. A favorite is the Tuesday Night Fun Night - practice shooting, social interaction, food, drink, etc.

Summer league action begins in May and ends with the beginning of the fall bow-hunting season in September. In addition, several outdoor shoots are open to the public:

• May 23-24: Club 3D shoot and NFAA tournament

• June 20-21: Club 3D shoot and MAC qualifier/NFAA tournament

• July 4: NFAA field and hunter tournament

• Aug. 22-23: Club 3D shoot

MONROE - "We started out by selling life memberships for $100," said South Central Wisconsin Archers President Kevin Winkler. That was approximately 25 years ago.

Now, the organization boasts 65 adult members with nearly that many youngsters age 7-18 involved in youth archery programs. In addition, scores of young archers have 'graduated' to become active club members or taken their love of the sport elsewhere.

Group members meet during the winter months at their state of the art facility in the basement of the Monroe Professional Center at 1724 10th St. The facility includes a clubroom with kitchen area, bow setup room and restrooms. The indoor range has fifteen 20-yard lanes and four 10-yard lanes.

SCWA conducts its outdoor activities at the Argyle Rod & Gun Club facility on Hwy. 81 between Argyle and Monroe. The range there includes a 14-target National Field Archery Association course and a 14-target broadhead course.

The Argyle facility is one of the finest in the Midwest, according to Winkler. "The quality of targets is excellent." SCWA will host the Midwest Archery Championships there, April 18-19.

Club members look with pride on their youth program. "They (youth) are the future of archery," Winkler said. Scholarships awarded to deserving high school graduates from the area each year is a reflection of the group's interest in serving area youth.

Al Metz of South Wayne is the coordinator of the youth program. A ten-year member of the club, Metz decided he "wanted to know everything" about archery and completed a shooter's school sponsored by the NFAA.

"I sat down just like one of the kids; then I came back to help coach," he said while gazing proudly at a wall covered with photos of young archers in action.

Metz later went on to earn Master Coach and Olympic Coach certification, one of only 28 in the entire country. "He's done a lot for the club," Winkler noted.

Josh Binger, son of members Steve and Patty Binger, is one Monroe native who has made the most of the opportunity. A Collegiate Archery All-American, he qualified for the World University Archery Championships in the Slovak Republic while a student at Texas A&M University and competed in four College World Championship events.

New members are always welcome, Winkler stated. The annual membership fee is $40 for a single membership and $50 for a family.

Youth memberships (students age 7-18) are free with the completion of a four-hour work requirement. A Youth Sponsor membership is also available for parents who do not wish to get involved in archery, but would like to offer their children the opportunity.

SCWA will hold its annual banquet on April 18 at the Argyle facility. Tickets are $25 per couple. For more information, contact Kevin Winkler at 325-9326 or Bob Ruchti at 325-7278.
