NEW GLARUS - It's only fitting that the Highway 69 rivalry would come down to a thrilling finish as New Glarus sophomore Gavin Binger made a free throw to help the Glarner Knights pull out a thrilling 54-53 win over rival Belleville Friday, Jan. 10.
Binger scored a game-high 19 points to pace the Knights who won their first Capitol South Conference game. New Glarus junior Colton Boley came up with a steal late in the fourth quarter to seal the win for the Knights. Boley scored 14 points and had two 3-pointers.
"It's a good way to open up conference," New Glarus coach Travis Sysko said. "Belleville is a rivalry game. It was just a good high school basketball game."
New Glarus' Kyle Larson added 10 points and was one of three in double figures for the Knights.
"We don't count on one guy to score all of our points," Sysko said. "It's a nice luxury to have right now."
With the win, New Glarus improves to 5-5, 1-0 Capitol South.
Albany 54, Juda 14
ALBANY - The Albany boys basketball team held Juda scoreless in two quarters Friday on their way to an impressive 54-14 home victory.
Albany sprinted to a 10-0 lead to close the first quarter and took a 26-7 lead into halftime thanks to efficient play on both ends of the floor.
Albany coach Derik Doescher said tough man-to-man defense is what led the Comets to the win.
"We just kept the guys in front of us," Doescher said.
Juda attempted only two free throws for the entire game, a credit to high energy on the defensive end for Albany, Doescher said. "When you can hold a team down offensively and not get them to the foul line, that shows the guys are playing hard."
For Albany, Isaiah Shell led all scorers with 18 points and Mitchell Kauk and Grant Schoenenberger chipped in seven apiece.
Patrick Bergum led the way for Juda with six points.
