BOSCOBEL - The Monroe girls and boys track teams raised the bar at Thursday's WIAA Division 2 Boscobel sectional, qualifying three relays and two individuals for state.
The Lady Cheesemakers, the Clinton regional champions, finished seventh among 34 squads Thursday with 33.5 points. Sugar River's Lady Raiders edged the Cheese for sixth with 34 points, and Brodhead-Juda was 14th with 20 points.
The Monroe girls' 3,200-meter relay team of Tess Seichter, Tessa Frutiger, Stephanie Wyss and Calyn Bidlingmaier finished third with a season-best time of 9 minutes, 54.46 seconds to punch its ticket to the WIAA Division 2 state track meet next Friday at UW-La Crosse.
The girls' 400 relay team of Breanna Bazley, Wyss, Jess Miller and Ty Gibson took fourth, also qualifying in a season-best time (:52.46).
"We put a lot of time into those relays," Monroe coach Curt Miller said. "They definitely deserve the chance to run up at La Crosse and I'm looking forward to it."
Monroe senior Meaghan Tomasiewicz finished second and qualified in the high jump, clearing a career-best 5 feet, 3 inches.
New Glarus senior and state record-holder Ashley Beutler returns to the big stage in both the 1600 (1st, 5:06.27), and the 3200 (1st, 11:00.92). Both of Beutler's finals times were more than 10 seconds swifter than her seed times. Her classmate, Carly Brown, took third in the 3200 (11:44.63), more than half a minute faster than her seed.
Brodhead freshman Shannon Klein took the fourth and final qualifying spot in the 800 (2:20.27). Her teammates (Amanda Johnson, Brittany Schwartzlow, Larissa Klemm and Cassie Wymer) also took fourth in the 4x200 (1:50.42).
The other season-best times for the Monroe girls track team included Claire Wyttenbach, who took sixth in the 100 hurdles (:17.26) and seventh in the 300 hurdles (:50.40).
The girls' 1,600 relay team of Madeline Arnold, Tessa Frutiger, Gibson and Wyss took sixth with a season-best time of 4:13.61.
One year after breaking the 3,200 relay record at state (7:42.91), the Monroe boys are returning to state in the event. The cast may be different, but the thrill of qualifying is the same. The Cheesemakers' 3,200 relay team of Scott Klein, Matthew Priebe, Cullen Sampson and Brett DeNure finished second (8:05.55), smashing its season-best time by almost 15 seconds.
DeNure also qualified for state in the 800 with a time of 1:59.66.
The boys finished 14th at the Boscobel sectional with 22 points. Brodhead-Juda took seventh with 31 points and Sugar River was 19th (16).
"I think they (the 3,200 relay team) are gunning for 8 flat," Monroe boys track coach Dave Hirsbrunner said. "I'm not sure if that's possible. To run 8 flat would be a phenomenal effort on their part. We have one more shot to do it."
Monroe junior Lucas Leu threw a lifetime best 147-5 to finish fifth, which is fourth on the all-time junior list.
"He was five inches from going to state," Hirsbrunner said.
The other season-best times included Jon Swartz in the 1,600 (4:45.81), the 400 relay team of Jordan Steiner, Tad Christen, Mason Goff and Zach Rast (0:46.15) and the 1,600 relay team of Caleb Ahrens, Christen, Sampson and DeNure (3:30.33).
Sugar River's bid to send two athletes to state was impeded by Brodhead senior Caleb Frost. After missing Jeremy McDermott for the fourth and final place in the 110 hurdles in the prelims by six-hundredths of a second, Frost improved by exactly half a second and took fourth (15.50). Josh Cate will represent the Raiders in the 3200 (9:45.83). Frost's buddies from the gridiron took care of the field portion. Juda senior Elias Klar won the pole vault (14-0) and Brodhead senior Gary McAdory took third in the shot put (46-7.5) to qualify.
