MONROE - Five area football teams in southern and southwest Wisconsin punched their tickets to the playoffs.
The WIAA announced Saturday morning that five area teams were part of the 224-team playoff field including Darlington, Brodhead-Juda, Pecatonica-Argyle, Black Hawk and Evansville-Albany.
Darlington (8-1), the Division 6 state runner-up last year and SWAL Conference champion, is expected to receive a No. 1 seed. The eight-team playoff groupings were expected to be released by 1:30 a.m. The brackets and playoff pairings will not be announced until later Saturday afternoon after coaches meet to seed the eight teams in their playoff groupings.
Two other area teams clinched conference co-championships including Brodhead-Juda (8-1, 5-1 Rock Valley South) and Evansville-Albany (6-3, 5-1 Rock Valley North). Brodhead-Juda beat Walworth Big-Foot 27-21 to snap the Chiefs' 53-game conference winning streak and clinch a share of the Rock Valley South title for the first time since 2003. Evansville-Albany defeated McFarland 27-0 to clinch a share of the Rock Valley North Conference title with Jefferson. It's the 24th straight year Brodhead-Juda is in the playoffs.
"We knew in order to get a share of the conference championship we had to go through them (Big Foot)," Brodhead-Juda coach B.J. Bockhop said.
First-round playoff games are scheduled to be played either Friday, Oct. 24 or Saturday, Oct. 25. The state championships at Camp Randall Stadium are set for Thursday, Nov. 20 and Friday, Nov. 21.
