Five set for next step

WALWORTH - High fives were handed out liberally by Monroe's tennis players at Monday's WIAA Division 2 sub-sectional meet at Big Foot High School.

Five athletes will travel to Wednesday's sectional meet at UW-Whitewater and Monroe's 16 team points were good for second in Monday's meet behind Madison Edgewood's 20. The No. 1 doubles pairing of senior Matt Turek and Levi Janssens punched their ticket emphatically with a 6-1,. 6-0 victory over Whitewater's duo. Nick Hendrickson cruised similarly in their first match, a 6-1, 6-0 defeat of an East Troy team before getting past McFarland's team for the third time this season, 6-1, 6-4, to advance.

Dan Becker hopped on the bus with a pair of solid victories, a 6-0, 6-0 whitewashing of Big Foot and a 6-3, 6-1 win over East Troy.

Freshman No. 1 Carson Root lost his only match today 6-1, 6-2 to the third seed from Jefferson. Junior Matt Le won his first No. 2 singles match, 6-1, 6-1, over Union Grove before falling, 6-4, 6-3, to Jefferson, ending his day. Junior Artem Bralgin also won his first match, 6-2, 6-2, over East Troy before losing to Jefferson, 7-6, 6-2.

Mark Hoesly and Jim Kundert were rolling with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Whitewater and a 5-7, 6-2, 6-3, cliff-hanging win over Big Foot before the duo lost to Edgerton, 6-2, 6-3.
