NEW GLARUS - Lakeside Lutheran poses threats in the field, on the mound and at the plate. Friday afternoon, the Warriors used all three to perfection, dropping the Glarner Knights, 8-1.

"Typically we play good defense, and that wasn't there for us today," New Glarus coach Warren Howard said. "Against a team like Lakeside Lutheran, you can't make those mistakes."

The Knights committed six errors, which allowed for three unearned runs off its pitching staff against starter Ryan Bright, who lasted 4 2/3 innings.

"We wasted a great start from Ryan Bright," Howard said. "He didn't allow an earned run of those seven. He deserved better."

Bright said he thought he was throwing the ball well and was disappointed with the outcome.

"I felt comfortable. I was throwing strikes early on," said Bright, who struck out four and walked five but allowed three earned runs. "My pitch count was pretty high for the number of innings I threw, but I did what I could."

Lakeside Lutheran had just one error in the game, and that was in the first inning. The Warriors scattered seven hits in the contest, including four in the first six innings.

Lakeside Lutheran didn't get on the board until the third. After back-to-back one-out errors by the infield, Tyler Buss hit a liner through the hole on the left side, scoring a run.

In the fifth, the Warriors got two runs on a home run to left center by Aaron Struck, making the score 3-0.

The next inning, Bright got the leadoff batter to ground out back to him. From there, Bright let up a hit and two walks, loading the bases. A sacrifice fly scored a run and another walk re-loaded the bases. Lutheran's Tyler Trieloff then hit a sharp grounder to first, but Carlin Moen bobbled the ball and then threw wild trying to get the runner at home, allowing two runners to score.

Reliever Nick Stuessy closed out the frame, minimizing the damage. In the sixth, Stuessy allowed back-to-back walks and Buss jacked a double off the left center fence, scoring two more.

The Knights got their only run in the bottom of the seventh. Evan Hauge hit an infield single and Braden Pittman singled to right. Brendan Pittman then sent an RBI single to left and both runners moved to second and third on the throw home. But Bright and Lane Sunde went down to close out the game.

"Hopefully that gives the guys some confidence going forward," Howard said.

Bright, one of the team's few seniors, struggled at the plate, going 0-for-4 with three punchouts.

"I don't let that affect me on the mound," Bright said of his hitting. "I just mentally wasn't with it tonight.

"We just have to re-group. That was a good team, but we have a couple of games coming up in the next few weeks, so we'll have a chance to put this one behind us."
