MONROE - The eighth-grade Blaze team wrapped up their careers with a huge 30-8 win over Sacred Heart Red from Sun Prairie Saturday, Oct. 26.

The first quarter started out slow, but with great blocking from Joe Crubaugh, Joe Hughes, Kieran Bazley, Tyler Leutenegger, Brett Dorsey, John Fuller, Jevon Gibson and Sam Hanson, Brayden Zettle was able to run a quarterback keep 72 yards for a touchdown. Sam Kind ran the ball for another touchdown with Dempzy Foley adding the point after.

Just before halftime, Zettle threw a 45-yard pass to David Keegan who took it to the 5-yard line. Zettle then ran it in for the touchdown and Foley again added the PAT to give the Blaze a 22-0 lead at the half.

Even with Dylan Scace recovering a fumble, Sacred Heart answered with a touchdown in the third quarter. The Blaze answered back with 5 minutes left, scoring their final touchdown by Zettle.

The eighth-grade Blaze team ends their five-year Blaze football career with a 25-9-1 record.

Seventh-grade White

The Blaze seventh-grade White team lost a close battle to Middleton Red 8-6 Saturday, Oct. 26.

The Blaze dominated the first quarter on their first drive and also after recovering a fumble, reaching the Middleton 20-yard line both times but then turned the ball over on downs. In the second quarter, Middleton went to a unique wedge formation on offense and later scored on a 28-yard run. The two-point kick was good for an 8-0 lead. Later in the second quarter, the Blaze drove the ball 65 yards in seven plays and scored on a 35-yard run by Jordan Montgomery. The extra point try failed and the Blaze trailed at half 8-6.

In the second half, both teams moved the ball between the 30-yard lines, but neither had any good scoring chances.

Statistically, both teams were about even in the run game and neither team completed a pass. The Blaze recovered three fumbles and intercepted a pass for the game but failed to take advantage of winning the turnover battle with any points.

The seventh-grade White team finished the season with a 3-4 record.

Seventh-grade Red

The seventh-grade Red team ended their season with a loss to the Eastside Sharks 29-0 at LaFollette.

Monroe's offense was able to move the ball and rush for over 100 yards and completed 2-of-3 passes. Defensively, although putting in a good effort, Monroe just couldn't stop the quickness of Eastside. The seventh grade Red coaches and players got together on Sunday, Oct. 27 for an end-of-season pizza party.

Sixth-grade Red

The Monroe Blaze Red held an explosive offense of Warner Park to only 8 points - their lowest total of the year. The offensive line had their work cut out for them on Saturday and the sixth-grade Red tied Warner Park at 8.

The Warner team scored first, but the Blaze did not quit. The Blaze plowed their way to the end zone for Brandon Blum to punch it in to tie the score. On offense, the tight ends, receivers and running backs ran hard on the field. Travis Edmunds, Derrick Ritschard and Alex Witt ran hard. Trevor Hartwig, Aidan Sweeney and Shaun Sweeney played great defense against the opposition. Patrick Rielly and tight ends Brady Biba, Aaron Ziolkowski and Craig Thom had some key blocks.

Sixth-grade White

Monroe's sixth-grade White Blaze team finished off its season with a 16-14 road win against Sun Prairie Gold.

Monroe started the scoring on a 61-yard touchdown scamper by Logan Leuzinger on their first possession. Julian Gruber added the PAT to take the lead 8-0. Stout defense dominated the remainder of the first half until the last two minutes, when Sun Prairie ripped off a 42-yard touchdown run to cut the lead to 8-6.

Getting the ball back with less than 2 minutes in the second quarter, Monroe went into their hurry-up offense and scored on a Nick Bansley 50-yard run. Gruber added the PAT to give Monroe a 16-6 lead at the half.

The final score of the game came on Sun Prairie's third play of the third quarter, when they ran 53 yards and added a two-point conversion to cut the Blaze team's win to 16-14. Both defenses dominated the remainder of the game, with Bansley, Tim Beckman, Darian Hargrove, Deion Hargrove, Jared Dillon, Gruber, Leuzinger, Jud Rikkers and Mason Seffrood having multiple tackle games. Monroe sixth-grade White finishes its season 5-2-1 overall, and 4-2-1 in the league.

Fifth-grade Blaze

The Monroe fifth-graders held tough for as long as they could against an undefeated Sun Prairie team, but lost 26-6.

With the loss, the fifth-grade Blaze end the season with a 3-3-1 record. The numbers do not say it all as two of the three losses were in very close games. The win-loss record is not the only measurement of success. Other measurements of this season are:

1. Group of boys finishing their second season of tackle football.

2. Group of first-year players making it through one year of tackle football, proving you can join up at any time and still make a difference.

3. Players playing multiple positions in practice and games on offense and defense, making them well-rounded football athletes.

4. Learning how to manage the emotions of winning and losing.

5. Increasing body strength and leg drive through hard work and skill - specific exercise.

Fourth-grade Blaze

The fourth-grade Blaze concluded their first season dropping the finale 32-12 to the Verona Orange Wildcats. The Blaze offense started strong, as they took the opening possession in for a score. The drive was highlighted by a 28-yard pass from Chase Stoerp to Floyd Wells that took the ball all the way down to the 5-yard line. Two plays later, Aaron Roidt went from 1-yard out to put the Blaze up 6-0. Both teams battled field position until a Wildcat player intercepted a Blaze pass for 45-yard touchdown return.

The Wildcats ended the scoring in the first half with a 75-yard touchdown run to take a 12-6 lead at the half. The second half saw the Verona Orange team kick it into high gear, as the Blaze had a difficult time stopping their running backs.

The Blaze ended the scoring for the day on a Heath Huschitt 4-yard touchdown run. The drive was highlighted by a 30-yard catch from Carson Leuzinger to Bryce Biba. Statistically, the Blaze had 31 rushing attempts for 76 yards and completed two passes for 58 yards. Defensively, J.T. Seagraves, Carter Trolinger, Wells and Connor McMannes led the Blaze in tackles, with Jake Grebner recovering a fumble.

In their first season, the fourth-grade Blaze team finished with a 4-3 record.
