MONROE - The Twining Park disc golf course will play host to the annual Monroe Parks and Recreation best shot doubles tournament Saturday, Aug. 24, and it may be the last time the event is held with the course's current nine-hole format.

Some of the proceeds from the event will go toward funding the course expansion to 18 holes, which Parks Director Paul Klinzing is progressing toward a finalized design.

"Patrick Blake, the course designer that originally looked at the Twining course last fall, was down ... to plan for the additional nine holes," Klinzing said. "He is planning to get me a design shortly, which we would like to share with some people who use the course, for their input."

Klinzing said Blake will also be coming to Monroe to help install the new basket anchors, as well as to mark the locations of new concrete tee pads.

"We plan to get going with this as soon as the design is done and get some input on what he is proposing," Klinzing said. "We will then work on the basket installation and tee pad installation soon after."

In addition to the concrete tee pads, which will be installed on all 18 holes, new signage will be added to help players better navigate the course.

On Saturday, though, players competing in the tournament will do so with the current layout and amenities.

Check-in and registration for the tournament will be held from 8:30 to 9 a.m. The cost to enter is $25 per team, with $20 going toward the cash payout for winners and $5 going toward the Parks Department. After registration is complete, there will be a short meeting at 9:15 a.m. to explain the format of the competition. Play will begin at 9:30 a.m. The tournament will consist of multiple rounds, with an hour lunch break in between.
