CUBA CITY - Both the Darlington boys and girls cross country teams ran to Southwest Activities League championships Thursday, Oct. 17.
The Darlington boys came away with the title 27-54 over Albany at the Cole Acres Golf Course. The Redbirds had five of the top 10 runners. Darlington senior Tyson Miehe, the two-time WIAA Division 3 state champion, won the title running the 5,000-meter course in 15 minutes, 46 seconds. Darlington sophomore Jaden Komprood finished third (16:49), junior Thomas Schultz took fourth (16:58).
Darlington sophomore Sean Barbee took ninth (17:41) and sophomore Blake Cwynar was 10th (17:43).
Albany was led by junior Aaron Johnson who finished fifth (17:14). Albany junior Brennan Bloedel finished sixth (17:16) and sophomore Tyler Dahl was eighth (17:40). Sophomore Josh Little took 11th (17:44) and junior Mitchell Trow was 24th (19:17).
In the girls' race, the Redbirds edged Boscobel for the team title 27-31.
Darlington senior Claire Cullen finished third (16:18) and freshman teammate Paige Schilling was fourth (16:24) followed by junior teammate Johanna Meister who took fifth 16:32).
The Redbirds had five runners in the top eight. Senior Darby Fitzsimons took seventh and senior Carly Reilly was eighth (17:21).
Pecatonica-Argyle finished fourth as a team (113). The Vikings were led by sophomore Samantha Erickson who finished ninth (17:36). Sophomore Hannah James took 22nd (19:16), freshman Josie Penniston took 24th (19:34) and junior Jozey Thoman was 27th (19:29).
Rock Valley Conference
The Brodhead-Juda boys cross country team took fourth place at the Rock Valley Conference meet Thursday, Oct. 17.
Brodhead-Juda senior Dylan Johnson took second with a time of 17:35.
The Cardinals were also led by Peter Speckman who finished 14th (18:33). Senior Rodrigo Yescas took 29th (19:38) and Justin Krumwiede was 37th (19:52).
The Brodhead-Juda girls cross country team finished eighth (172) at the 11-team conference meet. Whitewater edged McFarland 80-85 for the team title.
The Cardinals had three of the top 27 runners led by Taylor Bluemel who took eighth (16:13). Senior teammate Morganne Goecks took 16th (16:44) and Taylor Covert was 27th (17:06).
