Darlington throttles Cuba City

CUBA CITY - The game was tied at zero late in the first quarter before a punt return changed everything.

Jason Singer took the Cubans punt and went 75 yards for a score with fewer than three minutes remaining in the first frame. Darlington scored another touchdown a little more than two minutes later and found themselves in the driver's seat.

"It (the punt return) was big for us," Redbirds coach Scott Zywicki said. "They were hanging with us pretty well up to that point. It gave us a boost in confidence and was pretty demoralizing for them."

Singer also had a 72-yard reception for a touchdown, his only reception of the game, and Tanner Wiegel rushed for 85 yards on 13 carries to help Darlington roll to a 41-0 victory.

"We had outstanding performances by a lot of people," Zywicki said. "Our entire defense played well, including getting a few interceptions and a fumble recovery. Only two teams have scored more than one touchdown against us all season."

With the win Darlington moves on to face Brookwood in the state quarterfinals.
