BANGOR - None of the area track and field squads were about to be left out in the cold Thursday evening the WIAA Division 3 Bangor sectional.

While the Darlington boys and girls cleaned up shop, sending athletes to compete at state in 14 different events between the two squads, the Six Rivers East teams more than held their own to join the caravan to La Crosse next Friday.

Senior Kyler Wiegel and freshman Alex Erickson both were members of three of the four Redbird relay teams that qualified. Darlington's 400-meter quartet of Wiegel, Erickson, Trynton Schwartz and Kyler's freshman brother Tucker won its event with a time of 45.33 seconds. Wiegel, Erickson and seniors Blake Wedig and Adam Pinnow took second in the 800 relay (1:34.07). Darlington's boys also placed fourth in the 1,600 relay (3:33.84) with sophomore Jordan Heinberg and senior Isaiah Goebel filling out the foursome. The group was right on the heels of Monticello's team of Mychael Schultz, Jordan Stern, Parker Havens and Matt Babler, which took third at 3:33.21.

Heinberg and Goebel joined Alex Jacobson and Aaron Stuaffacher in the fourth qualifying relay team, the 3,200 squad that took third at 8:24.04. Albany's Marc Johnson, Austin Blumer, Tyler Conley and Jake Lincicum were second at 8:22.32.

Lincicum, a senior, also took fourth in the 800 at 2:01.97. Wiegel placed fourth in the long jump (19 feet, 6.75 inches), while hulking junior Jeff Reichling advanced in the shot put (3rd, 53-8.25) and the discus (4th, 143-11). Bruce King rounded out Darlington's qualifiers with a third place in the high jump (5-10).

Black Hawk's lone qualifier, junior Tyler Whalen, won the 400 by 21-hundredths of a second (51.88) while Monticello's Schultz took fourth (52.91). Andy Dieterich of Pecatonica-Argyle, also a pitcher for the Vikings' baseball club, took fourth in the 1600 (4:39.36).

Lady Redbirds junior Marcia Roeper continued her breakout campaign by taking four events to state. She won the pole vault (11-7), and took second in the 100 (13.08), 26-hundredths ahead of Monticello junior Rachel Nelson. Roeper also finished fourth in the long jump (16-1.75). She joined Kara Krahenbuhl, Kelsi Blosch and Vanessa Schwartz in winning the 400 relay (51.58), just 65-hundredths before Black Hawk's Hailey Meier crossed for second. Katie Place, Savannah Ernzen and Rachel Rygh rounded out the Warriors' runner-up team and Pec-Argyle (Holly Vlasak, Kimee Chandler, Cassie Welch and Ariel Noble) took fourth (52.88). The same four Vikings took third in the 800 (1:49.49).

Senior Abby Wedig qualified for three state events. She won the 800 (2:21.34) and Pec-Argyle's Elise Sigg took second (2:23.75). Wedig also combined with Hana Miehe, sister Olivia Wedig and Ciara Wiegel to win the 3,200 (9:44.05). Wedig and Wiegel, along with junior Kelsi Blosch, joined Wedig in winning the 1,600. Another Pec-Argyle team (Sigg, Welch, Tanna Crull and Chandler) took fourth (4:12.67).

Sigg, a junior, won the 1,600 (5:23.27), while Monticello sophomore Kelsey Bernet was second (5:25.97). Bernet won the 3200 (11:53.40). Her junior teammate, Rachel Nelson, took fourth in the 200 (27.17).

Albany junior Devan Brugger took second in the 100 hurdles (16.67) and Comets senior Jordan Williams took third in the shot put (34-0). Meier of Black Hawk took second in the 400 (1:01.43), just 9-hundredths ahead of Nelson of Monticello.
