MONROE - Kayla Conrad was simply too dynamic to hold down forever Friday evening for Monroe's girls soccer team.
The Cheesemakers fell, 1-0, in a non-conference match with Mount Horeb as Conrad finally broke through in the 46th minute for her team-leading 11th goal of the season.
Monroe outshot the Vikings 16-9, most notably pouring on 13 shots in the first half. But goalkeeper Brittany Reed was up to the challenge in posting the clean sheet.
"We just couldn't put it in and in the second half we got a bit tired with such a small team," Monroe coach Miriam O'Neill said of her 14-player roster.
Horeb pitched a 4-0 shutout last year, showing further evidence of Monroe's progress.
"This was more competitive than we've ever played them," O'Neill said.
The Cheesemakers run into a familiar scenario Monday when they host Evansville in a non-conference match before the clubs square off again when WIAA regionals open Thursday.
That was the same scenario last year, and Monroe tied the Blue Devils in the regular-season finale before falling in the playoffs.
