PLATTEVILLE - The weather for much of Thursday wasn't ideal, but for a couple of area teams, the indoor track at UW-Platteville was more than suited to host a high school invite.
The Brodhead/Juda, Pec-Argyle, and Albany track and field teams all made the trip to compete against regional teams in multiple events that pinned some of the area's top talent against one another in the early season meet.
On the boys side, Brodhead-Juda turned in solid outings in a number of events. In the pole vault, senior Clay Welte came in second with a height of 12 feet, 6 inches. Junior Logan Mauer took second as well in the shot put. Sophomore Jakob Harper finished third in the 400-meter dash with a time of 57.51 seconds, while the boys 3,200-meter relay team took third.
For Albany, coach Tony Brewer was both surprised and pleased with some of his athlete's performances. Junior Aaron Johnson finished second in the 800 meters with a time of 2 minutes, 14.44 seconds, while teammate Josh Little claimed third.
"They both ran pretty well," Brewer said of the duo. "They had a good start, and anytime you're able to place multiple runners in the top three, you're always happy with that."
Hunter Georgeson made a lasting impression on Brewer with his performance in the 400-meter dash. Despite not finishing in the top three, the freshman was able to run well enough to spark a reaction by his coach.
"We need a 400 runner, and it was a nice surprise to see him (Georgeson) run that well," Brewer said. "He's definitely got speed."
In the 1,600 meters, Albany's Brennan Bloedel finished second, while Brodhead-Juda's Dylan Johnson finished third. Freshman Logan Green of Pec-Argyle finished 12th.
Brodhead-Juda girls coach Ken Petersen was more than happy with the way his squad faired. Considering that his team had little preparation time for the meet, Petersen was especially pleased with some of their performances.
"This meet was sort of last minute for us," he said. "We didn't have a whole lot of time to work with in terms of preparation, but we had some tremendous performances tonight."
Carly Mohns ended the night with a solid all-around performance, which only further solidified her status as an elite athlete. The senior finished first in both the long jump and triple jump, while finishing second in the girls shot put. Pec-Argyle senior Cassidy Steiner finished fifth in the shot put.
"She's (Mohns) such a tremendous athlete," Petersen said. "She's got speed, coordination, and all sorts of traits that you look for. You can place her anywhere, and she's one of our top performers in a lot of events. You'll see her in the throws and jumps and you'll turn around and she'll be running in the 800 relay."
Teammate Taylor Bluemel just missed out on first in the 1,600. The sophomore finished less than a second behind Northeast's Hannah Kilburg, crossing the line with a time of 5:40.79.
"Taylor had a great run," Petersen said. "She had a solid kick in her run. She just missed the end there, but she had a tremendous time and we are very happy with her run."
For Albany, senior Bailey Hlavachek finished second in the 400 with a time of 1:05:63, while the girls 3,200 relay team once again took first in the event, bettering their time from the Tri-State Invitational last Saturday.
"We started the meet off the same," Brewer said. "Our girls came out strong in the 3,200 and ran pretty well. We have a couple of newcomers, so it was good to see them build some confidence. But they improved their time from last weekend, and that's the main thing."
Pec-Argyle's Josie Penniston ran against a deep and competitive field in the 200 meters, where the freshman finished fifth.
